Challenge Entry score 4.9276

All the images taken below were taken for an advertising company that were asked to promote prepared meals for an outside boardwalk cafe Chit Chat With Flavours.

Asked if I would like to do the shoot and processing as well as the 10x8 printing to be placed on 3 panels that will be linked together and displayed outside for the walking public to see.
The 3rd panel was in production.

All the shots were taken as the meals were prepared for customers in the cafe, I used a sea shell back drop photo from the cafe and inserted this in the processing to keep the feel of the cafe.

Most of the dpc comments stated that the on camera flash was to strong, the advertising group stated this is what they would require as the photos would be competing with the natural sunlight and needed to stand out, very little editing was done on the actual photos other than the back ground.

There are 12 photos in the shoot @ $25.00 each which is very good for a photo that scored poorly in the challenge, i'll take the money, and the advise from the pros. but thanks for the comments.

Maybe next challenge we'll be voting in direct sunlight...

You go where the money is man and don't worry about comments from around here. Virtual ribbons don't mean shit if you're gettin' paid.

I was just glad to see that a good portion of the top 20 actually paid attention to the description and that the "out of the box" crew got burnt in many instances.

I don't know if it was due to the small amount of entries in this particular challenge...but, I am elated at the large amount of comments left. My Starbucks shot had 38 comments...and it didn't even ribbon!! And I looked, a lot of the other entries had just as many or more comments! Wow.

If I knew Starbucks drinks counted as fast food I would have entered. Grats to your shot!

Next time just put, "I only take advice from pros" in your title. That'll save people some time to comment on other works.

I knew the question of Starbucks being fast food would come up...which is surprising, since they have a drive-thru window and their muffins are mass produced, frozen and taste the same on the west coast as on the east. But, to confirm that it was considered fast food...I googled fast food and Wikipedia specifically listed Starbucks as a high-end (expensive) fast food...but, it is fast food none the less. And fast food is fast food, it includes the entire menu...not just portions of it.

Humorous story...when I went to purchase the mug for this shot, I asked a woman working there about their return policy. We got to talking and I told her I was using it to shoot for a challenge. She asked the topic...when I told her "fast food"...she was quite offended that I called her place of employment fast food. She said she didn't think that Starbucks fit into that catagory and stopped talking to me.

Starbuck's is fast food...even if they have fancy furniture and hip music playing in the background. They wouldn't still be in business if they weren't fast.

Obviously, the advertising group was happy with your shots. Glad to hear it since they were the customer.

So what you're saying is that there are no pros on this site. I'll keep that in mind in the future as this must include yourself as well. I don't blame you for taking the money (as you were paid to do the shoot...) but I don't think insulting the rest of the people here is really fair.

To be honest, the challenge was to make images that could be used to advertise the food. Therefore, I rated appetizing images higher. Just because people didn't find your image to be a winner, doesn't mean that it was a bad image -- you stated that the advertising group liked the shots. Frankly, I just wouldn't have ordered the sandwich pictured.

Art is subjective.

Just my opinion.

Yes, let's penalize and suppress creativity at every opportunity. I would have called mine "Food for a Fast?" except "Fast Food" is a more concise description and I didn't want to bludgeon people with the title -- I'd rather see if people think rather than just look glance at the photo ...

Seems a great shame to me that those who put some thought and creativity into doing something different and original get this sort of comment aimed at them.

I don't get it. To overcome sunlight they requested that you use a strong flash setting?

With all due respect...that doesn't make sense (if I understood it correctly).

Keeping the client happy is what's most important in this case but the client can be wrong at the same time.

well you got the job, so you must have done something right, but I would still have to agree that the flash is a bit harsh, and perhaps a larger crop would be good as well - or a shallow depth of field and an extreme amount of attention to detail in the food. I think food must be the most picky thing when it comes to details. It can go from tasty to not-so-tasty pretty quick.

I am not sure I understand what you mean with strong flash either??? A picture with rich colors and good contrast would compete with sunlight, but direct flash is not how I would go about getting it. Perhaps natural light from the side or behind, and a reflector or something to make the light as soft as possible.

not that i know so much, but the first two images make me want to eat the food. If i were wanting to make an attractive food image I would look at these two first images and figure out what they did right and what my image was lacking.

The first two lack honesty

If the challenge was to come up with a social commentary on fast food, or to devise a witty play on the words fast food, then yes, youre right. But the description, which was greatly ignored by many of the entrants, stated :"Your challenge this week is to become a fast food pro; make our mouths water, make us want to make a midnight food run! Your shot should be suitable for an advertising campaign."

Out of the box is not always the right response. If you were asked to take a picture of your foot, and you took a picture of your hand, is that creative?!

Depends if you can walk on them ?

Truth is, there is no box.

I used to walk on my hands in gym class...I was pretty good at it too! :) Actually I can use my feet as hands too...I've been nicknamed four-hands-monkey-boy...(you don't want to know why!)
