I began my course today in NYIP. The beggining sucks and I really hope it gets better. I bought it because I was struggling in a few areas and decided to try the course. I've heard alot about it just never able to find anyone who went through it and get advice on trying it out. I'll keep you posted as I go through the units and complete the course. Wish me luck

Nick,

I don't know about anybody else, but I've always wondered what the course would be like as well so I'd love it if you'd keep use updated periodically on how it's going.

Good Luck!

BTW, what sucks about the beginning?

I'm just shooting my pics for Unit 4. Yes some of the material is dated and it does discuss about developing film etc, but they are optional parts of the unit and you don't have to do them. I have learned quite a lot so far. The beginning does suck because it deals with alot of basic's, more for someone who has never really used an SLR or DSLR. Wait til you get to Unit 3 and beyond it gets better. The DVD with Unit 4 is about portraiture and it's amazing to watch, the guest instructor is Monte Zucker.

It was 25 minutes of the owners patting theirselves on the back. When they do finally begin it's looks as though it's from the 70's

CWYOU I hope it does pick up. So far I haven't learned anything except how to shell out $700

I'll keep everybody posted...

Is this a home study course (DIY) or is it some sort of online classes?

You could shell out $30k/year and go to a real school.... or not.

It's a home study course with a written test and photo assignment for each unit that it mailed to the school for marking. Tests and photos are returned with the marks and a cassette with the critique's and suggestions of the photo's. Here's a link to their site //www.nyip.com

I have one little rant about them. What the hell is up with sending CASSETTE tapes? I gotta go out and buy a player now... LOL

I presume you are taking the complete course in prof. photography. I just downloaded and read the catalog. I was interested in signing up, but your comments are not that great about it. I suspect I have much less experience then you though. Please update us as you go along.

This is turning out to be an incredible course. Although I smacked it in the beginning it picks up speed fairly quickly. I have broken through some major obstacles in my personal photography that I haven't been able to overcome on my own. It is a bit dated and could use an upgrade (CD's would be my first upgrade) but, overall it is an impressive course. Anyone want to buy a copy? Just kidding.

I just signed up for it yesterday. Looking forward to it.

Im shooting my photos for unit 2. I agree with the updating of the materials to perhaps cds instead of tapes, but the basics of the course certainly do lay good groundwork.

I just got my material for it. One of the letters in it states that they will be switching everything over to CD's in the next 1-2 years. I just started going through the material I received and there are cassettes and CD's in it (not sure yet if they are both lessons).

The CD's are actually DVD's for viewing AFTER you completed a Unit. The cassettes take you through the lessons.

I've just completed unit 3. The course does a great job of laying down the fundamentals of photography. Using those lessons in conjunction with DPC challenges has been a great learning tool for me.
