Hey guys,

Ok, here goes! I'm, putting together a coffee table book (if I have permission from all of the participants)of the Best of the Best of DPC.

Trouble is, there are so dang many blue ribbons! There are so many awesome shots out there, I'm going to need a little help. With 26 pages (a little more if needed) I am stuck on categorizing this book. So howz about a vote? Your favorites--the Best of the Best.

Please submit your favorite blue ribbon photo for the book, then I will IM the photographer and ask for permission, with full credit given of course, and we will go from there. The book will be either a 12x12 or 11.5x8.5, depending on how many go into the book.

Does any one have any issues with this? I think it'll be awesome.

Can't wait to see your favorites!
Chinpaca

If your favorite is a red or yellow, go ahead and submit it here too.

Hmmmmm, trying to keep it at least a ribbon, but if you all have favorites that are not ribbons, what do you think of putting them in the book too?

what is the purpose of the book? To help you sell your product? I hope you will let the photographers know this when you ask their permission to use images.

To answer grigrigirl, this book came about because I was making a book of my favorite emails, and someone suggested a Best of....
This will only be available to DPCers, since a few mentioned interest in having a book if they were in it.

thats cool as long as everyone knows where it stands and who is making the profit..if anyone.

I am rather cynical these days because it seems so many photographers are trying to come up with gimmicks to make a profit off of other photographers. Its a sad state of mind when you see those yahoo skin cream ads that promise plasticized perfection that only photoshop can achieve..and then realize that people actually buy into it. Sadder still to realize that this is how our world rotates...marketing hype. I am seeing far too much of this hype in the world of photography...seminars, gadgets and even camera bags that promise to make you a better photorapher...etc. Carry on...I am done venting....

If the profits were gong to something like ..i dont know..breast cancer research..now that would be awesome.

Not a ribboner, but it's still an excellent shot.

As a man who lost his mother to breast cancer and who is married to a beautiful woman who also lost her mother to breast cancer I would whole heartedly support something like what grigrigirl suggested. Other than that, someone else is benefiting from everyone else's hard work and skills.

Wow, such hostility. As long as you get permission from the photographers, I have no problem with you investing your time and energy and charging whatever the market will bear.

I'm a little baffled as to the reaction, actually. Isn't selling photos for publication one of the things people are trying to do? What's the difference if it's selling just for exposure or the fun of seeing your work in print? "Seeing my stuff in print" isn't enough of a reason for you, Goc? Fine, but as long as the shooters in the book are happy, why are you coming down so hard on even the idea?

The only one I have tagged as a favorite that has a blue is this one...

But I have others that I really like better that are not ribboners and some aren't even challenge entries.

Hey just thought of something.... are you going to put the photogs comments in this book? Might be worth it so you have the how to or photo details.... I don't know something. Maybe a little blurb from the photog when you get their permission?
08/15/2007 01:29:47 AM · #17
my point was that the photographers wouldnt be selling their work, they would be buying it by having to buy the book. Its all cool if they are cool with it. My question is, do the photographers buy the book at cost..or does someone along the line make a nice little profit and then have lots of pretty photos in books to use as examples on their website where they sell bookmaking to the public. Was just a thought. How much permission for use are the photographers giving away? Its all a lovely idea...especially for the person marketing the books. Free use of great pics that make her books look more impressive to the general public.

I just hope everything is made clear to everyone on all sides. Would still be a nice idea for a fundraiser for a good cause.

Wow. I was just looking at the site favorites

I thought scalvert would be number one but he only has HALF of the number one person with just over 700.

I'll be happy if I ever have a dozen!

Naturally the number one person heida is from Iceland. What is with that place and their superb photographers?

Ultimately, yeah, if people are cool with it, no problem, it is the individuals choice. Who are we to 'rain on the parade'. However, I think grigrigirl brings up a valid point. I didn't really think much of it, but then I was reminded of something. It seems kind of like a small scale version of that company, I can't remember the name of it, but I know a lot of folks here have gotten the e-mail in the past, that every year sends out notices to tons of people that their photos have been 'chosen' by their organization, and for X amount of $ you can purchase the book, that will include the photo if you choose to participate (pay).
I suppose it depends on the intent of the op, if it is just for 'cost', I guess it is just like a bunch of folks getting together and saying hey, let's put our photos in a book and buy them together to get a good price, just so we can have a book to look at for personal reasons, and feel good about.

Yah, a little suprising to see the hostility. This is not being marketed at all. Go back and read some of my recent threads. You'll see how this was born. You act like I'm exploiting DPCers and you don't even know me. The business I do is personal publishing, where people write their life story, or other personal projects, and order 1 or 2 copies. I also make Life Books for the Social Services Foster Care in my county. The book will cost $69.95+tax if we go with the photo journal. Depending on how many orders there are, I can maybe get it for cheaper. And when I ask permission from the photographer, I ask permission for the use of the picture, with full credits given. I haven't tried to sell them anything.

Have you ever published a book? Do you have any idea of the time it takes to gather the text, resize pictures if necccessary, then design each page for flow, continuity, balance, choose accompanying colors, backgrounds, etc? Criminootin! This is about fun, for US, DPCers who love DPC, and the artists that inspire and teach us so much. If you have a problem with that, go find another parade to rain on.

Ok, now I'm done venting. Let's get on with the fun! :)
