I was a happy verizon customer until I switched to earthlink in April of this year. Since then it has been a literal nightmare. For whatever reason Earthlink's servers have a serious problem in my area. I do not know when my phone ans dsl will be operative, I mean, it has been on and off. Yes, I had problems with the lines being taken down by a truck, but then, before and after, the server problems continue. I have had all I can take and so I instructed Verizon to take over again. They will do so on the 22nd of this month. Until then I am sometimes able to get on but never a guarantee. I decided to curtail all of my internet activity until I am back with Verizon. Can you believe this: Earthlink is charging 149.00 for early opt-out. Yes, I can fight it and I know I would succeed but really, I rather be doing something else. I will gladly pay the extortion fee to be rid of them.

Anyway, as you all know I have not been commenting at all. Hope to be back again by the 23. Meanwhile, I am so impressed with all recents efforts.

I will never subscribe to any IP that uses a phone line. When I went to cable the first time I thought it was great. Then I got a good deal on DSL and got rid of the cable. All I ever had was problems from day 1. I finally told them to cancel my account and switched back to cable.

Sorry to hear that Daniel, hurry back.

Granted I live a block or two away from my CO but in defense of Earthlink/DSL; I have been with them for six years and have had only 2 breif outages, they continually uprade my throughput and still at the same low price.

It's all about the distance from the CO and the condition of the phonelines to/in one's residence.

I had a pretty bad experience with Earthlink of a different type. My credit card info was stolen from their data base TWICE. The first time, I was alerted by a follow-up e-mail that was sent to my Earthlink address, that I had NEVER given to anyone or used other than to get info from Earthlink.

They wouldn't let me cancel without paying a penalty under my contract. I changed the credit card they had on file and two months later I had a bogus charge on it!

Man for about 6 years I had Earthlink as my provider - I then moved house and they told me it would take up to 3 weeks to have someone come round and look at my system - This is 2 weeks of arguing that my modem was broken even though i knew it wasn't - Then I was having the cable guy round and asked him how long it would take to get someone round and fit cable - he said about 8 minutes! I signed up there and then - Still never had a black out - can't tell you how many times I had to go to the local Starbucks to send! - Never again Earthlink - Or Earthstink as I call it!
