I am having a great deal of difficulty understanding why anyone would wantto cheat. If you want ribbons or prizes go where they are...many sites offer quite handsome prizes. If you want a challenge that makes you look at your world a bit differently each week, if you are interested in enlarging your abilities or at least attempting to enlarge them, then you follow the challenge rules. Why did we join if we didn't want to have the "challenge" experience and all that that entails? I am competitive by nature but competition isn't my motivation here (just don't play cribbage or scrabble with me) my motivation is to broaden my photographic horizons and I can't do that if I fall back on old images or fakes of some sort. I am not good enough to worry about forfeiting a ribbon but I amgood enough to know that ribbons are not going to teach me nearly as much as comments that sting or provoke me to better attention to my work. I think what Anne said would probably be endorsed by the vast majority of people who use this site.The number one aim, as far as I`m concerned
is to improve as a photographer and learn from the excellent techniques I see employed here week in, week out.
Personally,my knowledge of spot editing etc, is very limited and I would find it very difficult to cheat should I so desire.
However, this has not prevented my POV submission from coming under scrutiny..as someone has asked for a DQ.
I have submitted the original and all the adjustments made to the image and await a verdict.
The lesson here is that no matter how honest your actions and intentions,make sure you have everything in order as suspicion falls on everyone.

I second the motion. Really, what drives most people to this site is not neccisarily to win a prize, but at the core of it, people want to broaden their photography skills and learn to become a better photographer. At least that what drove me, and from reading a lot of forums and other comments, I have noticed that most people feel the same way.
As far as the competitions go, I am not looking to win neccasarily (though it would be kinda fun), but to improve. For me, the challenges are all about improvements. The value of the comments is much higher to me than the points. The point aspect (to some degree anyway) is just a game: you win, fine and and dandy, and if you don't oh well, try better next time. The value of learning to become a better photographer through the challenges and comments is by far the most important thing to me about this sight. Plus, its just plain fun to improve. If I were to have won dishonestly, the ribbon would mean nothing to me, it just a few colored pixels on the screen, woop-dee-doo. But if you put your heart into it and know you did the best shot you could, then the ribbon carries so much for value. The appreciation you get for knowing you did you best and improved is by far more important than any prize you could receive. |

| I totally agree with you, Ann. I want to be the best photographer I'm capable of being, and judging by the great photos on this site, I have a ways to go. Working full time, the challenges give me a reason to spend Saturday afternoon with my camera. If I happen to take a photo that places, I'll be thrilled. What's most important to me, though, is the feedback I get ... I can't believe how much I've learned from everyone here. Using photos I didn't specifically take for a challenge really wouldn't teach me much. I wouldn't get any satisfaction in a dishonest ribbon. |
