The reason you don't get knock is that the engine senses the knock being imminent and automatically retards the timing to adjust for it. I'm not sure if you're familiar with what causes engine knock, but newer cars can adjust their timing to accomodate for the change. What year BMW's did you have by chance? A far as I know most, if not all, use premium gas and have since at least 1999.

it still different with different cars in the 3 series.. there were still a few different engines used in the 3 series. It all depends if its an e30,e36 etc...

my 330i was MY 2006, my 328xi is a MY 2007.
Just in case you're wondering, I'm working for BMW. Not an engineer though, so no technical questions, please.

i dont get when your saying "was MY 2006""MY 2007"

MY= model year (usually after the summer break, when the factories close so they can modify the machinery for the new year. this means the production between September 2006 and July/August 2007 is Model Year 2007. There are of course many exceptions to this logic)
MY 2006 means the car was build between Septmeber 2005 and August 2006. The model year also determines other factors such as options included/excluded, engine versions, face lifts,...

oh i see! do you know much about the e30's?(ie- 91' 320i convertible)

Sorry I'm not technical at all. There are small differences in the cars depending what country they're sold in. These days it's a bit easier, the lawmakers pretty much request similar specs for the cars. But with the E90s it was still different. Depending on how detailed your question is and what coutry you live in, the call center might (probably not) answer the question. If you really need an answer, go to roadfly.com they have a BMW forum (bottom right). Tons of drivers participate in this forum.

Well I live in Canada, but we imported it in from Japan, so its in really good condition for a 91'. not one spec of rust, only 92,000 kms. I'm taking it on a test drive today!

MY = model year

noisemaker, one other reason to start off with a more modest car is that, especially if you want the BMW for image (which is the case for most of my BMW-driving friends), you will end up in this dangerous spiral of trying to afford something cooler, classier, and more expensive with each new car. But there will inevitably be a very humbling time when you have to put finances first and you will end up driving an "affordable" econobox or something, and your ego will suffer and you won't be happy. It's better to start off with something more reasonable and aspire to greater things. My first car was a hand-me-down Datsun that needed all kinds of help, and I thoroughly enjoyed fixing it up -- that's how I learned everything I know about cars and it was a great bonding experience with my dad. 20 years later I am driving cars I love (Infiniti G35 Coupe) and I don't feel like I've missed anything in the meantime.

How do you like that car? Any gripes or complaints? Things you like?

I have two bicycles- a road bike and a mountain bike. Saves me tons on insurance, gas, and car payments and is good for my health. I am easy walking distance from work and the grocery store. Helps photography too I think since I see things at a different level and can easily stop and shoot if I see anything interesting along the way.

That's what's seen the most miles this year anyway. If I lived closer to the factory, I'd have a TVR Griffith 500 for fun.

Awesome car. Grips so tight in the corners that I feel like I'm going to come out of the driver's seat, even with the substantial side-bolsters. Can stop so hard (with the Brembos) I feel like the paint is going to fly off the car. Looks to kill and it garners lot of attention (although the attention part is not the reason I bought it). Barely ever listen to the 12-speaker Bose stereo because the exhaust note is music to my ears.

Gripes? The paint is kinda soft -- stone chips galore. The transmission is loud. Very short-throw shifter but a little notchy. Difficult to finesse the clutch. Could have used better materials in the dash. Don't care for the amber instrument colors. Encourages heavy right foot, burnouts, and donuts on public streets. Cop magnet.

I would post a picture of it but I don't have any online right now -- they were on my webspace of my former ISP and have been deleted by them.

Thanks for the response. I'll be looking for a car soon since I'll be graduating and needing a car and this was towards the top of my list. I would get it used of course with ~40-60k miles on it. I've found them for around $18-$22k. Did you by chance compare with a BMW 325Ci/330Ci?

I can't say that i've been in a G35, they seem like cool cars, sharp looks and plenty of power. But my dad has an '02 BMW 330xi and it's fun as hell to drive! Love the all wheel drive, handles great, and it's pretty peppy. Watch out for the BMW service fees though, they're really steep from what my dad's said.

Volvo S80 Dualfuel and a Vauxhall (Opel) Astra Duelfuel

Both vehicles run on either regular petrol or on liquid petrolium gas. LPG is half the cost of petrol in the UK

Yes, I drove an IS300 and a 330Ci and neither of them performed like the G35 Coupe (or sedan w/ Sport package). Granted those other two had nicer interiors and a few other gimmicks the Infiniti didn't, but my main priority was the fun-to-drive factor and all the things that contribute to that -- and the G35c hit the spot. :-)
