Holy cow, what a disaster!
Early reports say as many as 60 cars may be under the bridge/water.

On CNN, the woman from Emergency Operations said that they believe they have 3 dead and between 50-100 vehicles in the water. If that's true, I'm sure there are more than 3 dead. Now it's getting dark and they have a thunderstorm moving in.

A very bad evening in Minneapolis. Our prayers are with the victims and the emergency crews.

Yeesh! Glad we took the other bridge the other day! We literally passed right through there on Monday night on our way home to Pittsburgh from Seattle! We took I-94, which passes about 3 miles north of this bridge.

Wow the footage is stunning and incredible. They are now reporting live - the numbers are all over the place - looks like 20-30 injuries with maybe 6 fatalaties....

arial view of the bridge from maps.live.com. The supports did not look all that beefy compared to the bridge next to it.

Hopefully we've already heard the worst of the news.

Now Wolf Blitzer is interviewing an eye witness. She corrected him on the PRONUNCIATION OF HER NAME! Get over yourself lady!

I am watching it live now and wow I just cant believe it, just spoke with my cousins down there and they are all fine. They always use that bridge and they told me they just used it this morning.

I still cant believe it, something right out of a movie. From what I heard so far they were doing contruction on the bridge, damn whomever that company is...they are in deep sh@#.

Probably jumping the gun on that a bit until the cause of the collapse is determined.

I just crossed the bridge a few days ago, there was construction, but honestly I didn't pay much attention, theres road construction everywhere in MN in the summer. I've heard from the trauma team there may still be 50+ cars in the river, :(. Unbelievably sad news. A school bus filled with kids fortunately made it across with just a few injuries.

especially since it said resurfacing which really shouldn't cause any problems with the supports but stranger things have happened.

such a terrible accident, hope the can find more survivors.

(off topic...man some of them maps on the Microsoft Live page are OLD, doesn't even show my neighborhood being built yet and I've owned the hourse for 3 years)

In case this gets to folks before I am able to respond to everyone...yes, I am fine, thank you. Scarily enough, that is a road that I travel frequently and the scene is really quite devastating. Thanks to everyone who checked in...

This has taken over all local TV stations. Looks like traffic was down to 2 lanes. So there could have been more cars on it when it went down.

The technology involved in building the bridge was new in the 60's and they would not build this bridge in this way now, but the report from 2002 didn't recommend any immediate action.

The bridge collapsed just before the baseball game started. They decided not to cancel because that would put even more traffic into the other bridges in the area. and it is safer for all those people to stay where they are and let downtown empty slowly rather than all at once.

All sort of local politicians are planning to show up and put their 2 cents in. Don't know how that will help anyone but their own profiles.

Hospital emergency plans are working well. Lots of walking wounded showing up on their own at hospitals. They are still in rescue mode, looking for survivors.

That is the gist of the local news.

Scary stuff. I don't drive, and this is not on my travel routs. But downtown traffic is going to be in complete disarray for months. I don't think this can be rebuilt before the building season ends in November.

I'm freaked out and rambeling.

This is very sad and very shocking. I almost went to the Twin's game tonight too....glad I didn't go now. I hope for the best and that the worst is over. I'd go down there and shoot some for you guys, but I don't think they need any more people there right now.

The pictures I shot. Tough to take hand held pictures and manually focusing with a crappy lens and a shaking hand. My fiancee and my cousin both drove on that simply an hour before.
