I thought that was for Advanced Editing. But I'm still trying to figure out the rules.

Here is rule you are referring to:

- saturate, desaturate or change the colors of your entry, but no selections are allowed.

The answer is that as long as you are desaturating certain colors on the entire image, then it is legal. So, if only one item in the image is blue and you desaturate all the other colors except for blue, the blue object will stay blue and all the others will be black and white.

You can do this using the individual color mode in hue/saturation in photoshop. But again, it has to be on the entire image, so if more than one thing is blue, all the blue things will still show.

Getting a bit better now. Nice comments too. I actually got some praise for once. I just wished people would be honest with their voting too. All I want to do is learn how to get some stunning images like you lot do.

Slightly happier now but I personally think high 5`s/6 would be a fair assumption of my photo.

Sigh

Be careful. Making selections is illegal in Basic, as is combining more than one picture ("picture" meaning "one click of the shutter"). But you'd be amazed at what's possible using global color changes (which are legal even in Basic) and within one picture.

See what Bassbone said above about changing colors in Basic rules, and then read this tutorial about desaturating in Basic. You can also look at my example of major color changes (which was validated during the challenge):
became

You can do multiple exposures in one click of the shutter by covering the lens and uncovering while pointing at something else. Here's my writeup of one example.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm pretty amused because my score is, oh, about 0.5 above where I expected it to be. :)

I did exactly what a few of you have discussed: my face is visible, but in the background. I used body language to express the emotion.

I just finished voting, and at least half of them left me despairing of people following the challenge theme. I'm just ... stunned. I'm not a crazy person about DNMC, but if there's no hint of an emotion ...

I think people misunderstood that it's supposed to be an image about an extreme emotion, not something to make the viewer feel an extreme emotion. For example, a picture of an ugly bug actually intrigues me, so if that's supposed to convey fear, it fails.

However, I know I miss things sometimes, so if I left a comment that I didn't see the emotion connection, feel free to PM me. I'm not promising anything, but I'll at least try to see whether I could've come up with what you tell me.

Me either. I just wanted to see if I could stir up some shit.

Thanks for the saturation tutorial. :) I've only experimented w/ it briefly. I'll definitely have to do more!

And as for my scores - *sigh* I believe you refer to last place as the brown ribbon? Maybe I should have gone w/ my humorous but technically awful still life. I just never know if people will get my humor.

I'm at 4.4887 and falling. And only one comment.

"pathetic effects": This was a comment just received and yes I am posting it and bitching.

Hopefully the commentor reads the scores thread. Enter a challenge, post some pics; especially after being here for a year; or save your PATHETIC comments. I hate open challenges. That is all!

It's a race for the brown. This is a personal worst for me. I didn't think it was that bad....

I do not think we both will get brown. There must be someone lower than this.

That someone would be me! I'm at 4.42, and still falling...

Plus I just got my first validation request! Does someone want the brown so bad that they've contested my image?

And when it's over, will I find out what they thought I did wrong? I don't care who the accuser is (probably wouldn't know who it is anyway, I'm too new), but I'd like to know what they thought I did. It's not like it's so good that they thought I stole it!

Donna, don't worry about the validation request - a request for validation doesn't mean someone is accusing you of cheating, just that they can't work out how the effect was achieved within the rule set; mostly, where it has found that the image isn't 'challenge legal' it is because the submitter has forgotten which rule set to use. We all get validation requests from time to time; it is one way of ensuring that there is as near level playing field as possible without the site council checking every single entry. I am always relieved when I get the e-mail giving me the all clear.

But I didn't even do much to it. We did just go over the fact that desaturation was legal in basic (to the whole image) and other than that, I only played w/ contrast a bit. (Maybe too much since my last entry didn't have enough, lol).

I hope I get that all clear soon, but I'd still like to know what they saw.

Here's a crazy idea. I know you're new to the site and everything. But i find that asking gets me a long way. :)

To get past the smartypants tone, when it's over, if you still don't know, send me a PM and I'll try to figure it out.

I'm not new, I've been here a whole 2 weeks!

LOL, being a smartypants myself, I understand where you're coming from. In fact I thought I was asking (in a roundabout way). It took me a while to find who to ask ("Please do not reply to this email" kinda makes that not an option) - if I'm reading the email correctly it's just the site help page. So I may take you up on that offer.

Actually I have put a shot that I shot for another challenge and then put it into another challenge. It is fun thing to do, though.
and yes I do not mind 4.5, would not much hurt my already low vote received average.
