I will be here in Hendersonville for one more week, and I would like to plan another time of photo taking on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This time was a little spontaneous and I didn't have much with me, or time to plan, plus I was loosing daylight. Then it started to rain and I was afraid to damage my photo so I took them from the car window. I really want to go home with ONE fantastic photo.

Can someone please take a look at these three shots and give me some tips for next week. I am not really much of a landscape photographer, but do believe it would be hard to take a "bad" photo of these incredible views. But I want a really good one.

These are the three I got that seemed to be the most appealing, but still not my dream capture of this area.

Any of you who take really great mountain photos have any tips for me, like should I take a tripod, or use different settings based on what I used. A differant lens?

And what time of day is best, early morning, late evening, noon?

Should I try to get more sky, less sky?

I know, lots of questions. I'm an eager student.

Thanks in advance for ANY suggestions.
#2 is straight from camera, #1 and #3 I upped the contrast.

From Hendersonville, get on the Parkway at the Biltmore Square Exit off of I-26 and go north. (Side note -- the aboretum is at this Parkway Entrance). Craggy Gardens is nice. I suspect all the rhododendron has bloomed, but there are still some nice vistas.

Mt. Mitchell can be breathtaking, literally and figuratively, when the weather is right.

If you go far enough North (about 3 or 4 hours on the Parkway, substantially less on the highway) is Grandfather Mountain and Chimney Rock.

Off of the parkway, but still with some great photo potential --

DuPont Forest in Brevard.
From Hendersonville, get on I-26 and go back towards Asheville. Take the airport exit and go towards Brevard. I have no idea how far it is (about 20 or 30 minutes). When you get to the red light where there is a shopping center on the right, and an outdoor center on the right, turn left. When you get to Penrose Quarry, turn right at the gas station and from there, there should be some sign to DuPont. There are some great waterfalls and easy (and not as easy) hiking trails.

Chimney Rock isn't far either.

Hope this helps.

As far as time of day, early morning and just before sunset has a nice light, but even in the midday, in some of the forests, you can still get some nice shots. I have found midday is best for the shots in and around the forests because so much of the light is blocked.

For the high points, early morning (so I've heard) and late afternoon are good, depending on which side of the mountain you are on.

I've been the Pisgah Forest and Brevard too. Both are great. Thanks so much for the tips on the nicest spots of the Blur Ridge. I only drove on it from Asheville to Brevard, so I did not get a chance to go north of Asheville. I'll have to try that.

I got this one for Looking Glass Falls in Brevard.

and this one of Hooker Falls On Pisgah Forrest

Both are a little odd looking because I was trying out the orton technique on them.
