I like my portrait of a person. I'm doing okay at around x.xxxx. I'll take whatever score I get as "constructive criticism", as long as it's a fair and objective vote. Who are those people who vote so low in the first 8 hours of most challenges? Enquiring minds want to know! (I don't need to know, as long as the SC knows!)

I have finished voting. I gave two "10" votes and seven "9" votes and congratulated those photographers on their efforts. Some really great and wonderful images in this challenge. Unfortunately, there are a lot of low quality, off topic images submitted, which wastes everyone's time. Is there no penalty for "apparently" intentional "DNMC" images?

Just curious...how do you know an image is intentional DNMC. I actually didn't see a DNMC image...Well except for a couple of Landscapes that a way out of the box...and one that was just not even close.

Their punishment is a low score though.

unless the person that entered the DNMC image is intentionally going for the "brown", then the low score is just what they want, not a punishment. I tend to give those 7s or 8s just to up their average little. ;-)

haha...I have you beat. I only used a window with the curtain possibly open...and I got a DNMC comment and getting plenty of those votes.

Well, if it wasn't a "natural light portrait", I assumed it was an intentional DNMC. That's for each voter to decide, of course. I do think there were an unusual number of images which mocked the challenge description. As you said.... "Their punishment is a low score..." I'm thinking there should be a DQ involved.... to help the voters and those who offer constructive comments a better chance to focus on the serious entries.

Well I didn't MOCK the challenge description...I followed it to a 'T' and still sit on a 4.9. So is that my punishment?

Images are not disqualified because they do not meet the challenge. Think about it. It would be quite a nightmare to do so. How would you define "doesn't meet the challenge?" A lot of times things do not look like what they actually are, and a lot of challenge topics are open to very different interpretations. It would be a nightmare to DQ images for DNMC.

If you, or anyone else, doesn't want to focus on images you don't consider serious because in your view they do not meet the challenge, skip over them, don't vote comment on them.

If you met the challenge description, yet are still receiving a low average after 100 opinions, then you should ask what other presentation issues exist. I think all votes are forms of constructive criticism and should be taken as valuable and important feedback. I'm sorry you're being beaten upon! We all retain emotional ownership in our images. It's due to cost of acquisition. I often have to remind myself that I'm blind to the flaws in my own images. It helps me understand the low votes I receive. And, I get my share of low votes. So, the best way to survive at this website is to realize it's possibly the worst gauntlet for photographers.... a peer review. Survive this and learn from the experience.... and you will be a better photographer... at the end of the day.

It's okay! Your comments are good and I'll take them to heart. However, I did find quite a few entries in this challenge to be a mockery of DPC and a drain on my time. And, I did choose as to whether to ignore them or to vote on them ... in the light of the challenge description.

Just so you know, if having to see that banana ten times over isn't followed up by you getting a ribbon, the taunting is never going to cease.

Leave for a couple of hours and the "nightime" voters strike. Dropped .14 in 14 votes. Suddenly, the ave. vote is BELOW 4for those 14 votes. What the hell!

Richard, I tend to disagree with a point that you've made here just a tad. Not all votes are "honest votes" in here. A lot of winning entries still have a number of 1's 2's and 3's when they are obviously worthy of a much higher vote value.

We also have to take into consideration something someone else has said in this thread. There IS emotional attachment to one's own photo and SOME voters cannot get past their own attachment enough to vote honestly and unbiased on others' photos. So, there's lots of room here for votes not being "constructive criticsm" necessarily.

And, then there is just plain personal tastes as well as personal interpretation of the challenge criteria that come into play here as well.

I've seen some very well composed, executed/captured photos miss the mark BIG TIME simply because that photographer saw his/her shot with a different eye than the voters seemed to see it. That, by far, didn't make it a "bad photo"!

So, yes.....while we can look at the scores we are receiving and comments and take them into consideration in learning, we cannot judge our photos by the scores that we are receiving BECAUSE there are so many other factors that come into play in those scores. Even comments are sometimes hard to decipher, let alone use and there's all kinds of reasons why someone has left a rather "head scratching" comment! Heaven knows, I've had some pretty unusual looks on my face in reading some of them!!! I'm sure everyone in here can attest to that! :))

Just my thoughts on this.

I hear ya girl, I'm in the same boat. No flash, no reflectors just pure natural lighting, have a great model but my overall editing could hurt me a little...
