Hey Guys!

I am screwed... or at least I feel that way. I got the sad ipod face going on in my iPod of less than 3 years. I took it to the new fancy Apple store on 59th street in Manhattan & they basically told me that my ipod is on its way out.

I have over 20GB of music & pix, not backed up, on it & am scrambling to find a way to get that data off of it.

My ipod came back for a minute and I tried to copy the music off using ipod liberator but it froze up and back to teh sad ipod face again.

Is there anyway I can disassemble my ipod or something to get the music & pix off of it? Any techies gurus out there that can help or point me in the right direction?

Thanks much in advance!

Circuit city has a kit/program to get it off. It also works on alot of phones and neat stuff. Depending on what Ipod some use microdrives the rest use flash. I have seen hard drive controllers wired up to ipods so its possible to go in reverse.

If its worth that much go find the transfer kit i saw and buy it. Leave the ipod alone till then. Apple wont let you reverse transfer normally.

Can you tell me a bit more about this? Nothing seems to work on the ipod. I have reverse transfer software & the ipod just freezes or isnt recognised by my 'puter.

the music and photos had to be on a computer before they were on the iPod. I guess they're no longer on the computer??

sadly, no. I had to format the 'puter it was on. Just always thought I had it on the ipod as a backup. Who knew the ipod would die after 2 years?!!!

HMMM...what does reverse transfer mean? If you are saying that you can't pull off data...I'm not sure that is true.

About a year ago someone asked for help with getting music "off" his Ipod and onto another computer. If I remember correctly, we fooled around with it on "disk" mode and finally was able to see the music files. We were able to transfer. However, one catch...the music wasn't "titled" ! All the songs were "numbered" with some kind of code so what we ended up with was about 1500 songs on a hard drive...songs we could not identify unless we "played" them. I think it took him weeks to "rename" all of them.

How many mobile electronic devices have you had that really last more then 2 years. Your typical cell phone dies after two years, many point and shoots give out after 2 years. Many last more most cell phones that manage to survive 2 years of even moderate use still need a new battery.

It does suck but I wouldnt place more then 2 years on most small moderate to frequent use devices, before they atleast need repair (such as battery replacement). Many others will die.

You can get a (30GB i think) Ipod Video for like 220 bucks these days. Its still a bit of money to put down and chances are you paid more then that for your old ipod.

Yeah. All I really want is my music & pix off the ipod. At this point I could care less that the actually ipod is dying.

Will try to put it in disk mode. It worked before but the last time I tried it it didint.

Shoot! Disk Mode not working. Got it there but the computer is just not opening up the window.

Can I crack the bastard open & do something from there?

There are dozens of utilities that can get the music off an iPod without losing the ID tags (song title, album, artist, etc.). If your iPod can sustain a connection to the computer for a few minutes, one of these utilities can pull the music off.

Yeah your not gonna find anything usable, taking it apart wont help you at all and theres a minor chance it could hurt instead.

Send it to these guys: IPod Mechanic make sure you request "extraction service" so they can try to get your music off of it if they can.

What else can I do & what else is there left to do. Apple basically told me to eff-off and that there is nothing you can do about hardware problems. They wont event try to salvage the data.

Is there a HARD reset on it, to try?

Another thing to try
Different solution
How to open

How to force the iPod into disk mode (may try this-first)

im not sure what kind of a computer you are using but I have a program on my mac called Senuti which takes songs from your ipod to your computer. Its free so if thats of any help try it out. I use it to "share" music with my friends.

Rooster the obvious question is where is the computer that you keep your itunes on to sync to the ipod. That is the library the you should be backing up. I have transferred my files to CD's and move them between Mac and PC. Each generation of ipod has a different reset procedure and they are on the Apple support site. The latest is lock the slide on top then unlock it and hold down the menu and center button until the apple appears. Good luck it sounds like it may be time to replace the battery and there are kits for that on line. If you recover the data from you sync computer it is probably more reliable to just get a new one.

They've saved many in similar positions. Glad I could help. Hopefully they can get your music and your iPod back in order.

All media players subject to the same death and problems as the ipod or any other. Company doesnt matter either, Ford will build a compleet pile of crap then theyl build a car that doesnt have any problems or recalls for the first 5 years. I have had sony products that never failed me and then I have a brand new monitor fail in the first week. Never had a problem with HP, then I had 3 of their monitors go up (dunno if they make their own).

At least you had yours for almost 3 years! Mine died just before the 1 year mark. It was still under warranty though so Apple just gave me a new one. Good luck with everything.
