As of this last Monday night two of the things I love doing are now very difficult if not almost impossible, photography and restoring my 80' Z28. I was working on the engine with the cylinder heads standing upright and not sure what happened as it went so quick but I had my left hand braced on a small anvil and right hand holding the head, next thing I knew the head fell over hitting my hand with an eerie crunch. I pulled back right after the impact and just sat there for prob about 5min watch my hand swell like a balloon. For those that don't know what a cylinder head is, its about 40 or 50lbs of cast iron, very heavy and unforgiving. Ends up I have a fractured wrist and it was dislocated at the same time which really sucked when they worked it back in. Now I cant really hold my camera properly so that takes any and all fun out if it and makes it a literal pain so that's out. And now I cant work on the Camaro either with only my right paw. And currently they have no idea how long Ill be in a cast as apparently wrists esp when theres a lot of damage can take a lot to repair them selves. I have to get the cast cut off and more xrays next Thurs which they hope to determine if theres any further damage as they said more damage can show up to about 10 days later :(

Just needed to vent...

Dang, that sucks. Maybe you can find a new hobby. Try something like...Watching car shows on TV? *g* Hopefully, you heal quickly.

That really sucks David, maybe put your camera on your tripod for a while and try photos that way. Could be good for landscape stuff if you can set up your tripod one handed.

Yup, definitely time to invest in a tripod and a one-handed, joystick-type ball grip head. Sorry to hear about your accident :-(

YIKES! Sorry to hear about this Dave...

Always try to find SOMETHING positive - maybe you will end up spending more time with someone important to you, or doing something else that your current hobbies haven't left time for.

Regardless, here's to a speedy recovery - let us know how things turn out, okay?

Assuming it's just a fracture - I broke my wrist and it was healed and functional in about 6 weeks. The longest 6 weeks ever, but cheer up it doesn't take too long to get it back.

Guess ya need a new tripod
They "casted" it right off? Or is it a fiberglass splint? Cast wouldn't allow any leeway for swelling, and your fingers will fall off.

That is a tough break for you. If you have a P&S camera, you may be able to keep shooting with one hand for a while, until the other one gets back to where you can use it. Another option would be to see if they can cast a tripod ball head into the cast when they change it, or maybe you can stick one on it with "Bondo". It must make typing a chore too. Good luck and quick healing to you. Which hand did you mess up?

Thanks all for your comments, their much appreciated. It was my left hand that got hit, thankfully I'm right handed :) and yes I have a full fiberglass cast from my knuckles to 3/4 the way to my elbow. It still hurts like hell and taking pain killers during the day and beer at night :P Some guys in the Camaro club I'm in have offered to help me get the engine to the re-builder and if I'm still buggered up when I get it back they offered to help install the engine back in the car :) currently there are 2 or 3 suspected fractures in my wrist and that's why I'm in a cast ATM. Their going to check it again on Thurs to hopefully see if there is any more/less damage than what the initial exam showed.

Thanks again, I love this place and the friends I have here :)

I feel for ya. Heat of the summer and a cast, that's rough. When I shattered my wrist I had a cast that went up almost to my armpit. At least that was in the fall and the cast kept me warm. Try not to scratch if you can and if you can't don't use anything sharp.

Seen it happen before. I used to help build cars many moons ago back in NY. Hope it heals fast so you can get back to both your passions.

P.S. I had these on my '66 Nova. They weighed about 25-30 lbs each.

I am happy to hear that it was not your primary hand that got trashed. Since the cast is already there, and it's fiberglass, you can put a camera mount on it with a hose clamp or two, so that you can keep on shooting. I'm sure that your pals would be happy to help with that

Yea Ive been thinking of getting a nice set of aluminum heads but the story goes my mother bought the car new in 1980 and had it up until early last year when I got it. So the car is ALL numbers matching and I have all the receipts and factory build sheets which helps to maintain its value which in some respect means nothing to me as I will most likely never get rid of it for any some of money. For anyone interested its the yellow car below.

Clean car!!! I had a '76. How about building another engine? Rebuild the one in the car to stock specs and store it?

I actually thought about getting a nice late model crate 350cdi engine with multi port EFI and everything but I don't really have that kind of money and the guy thats doing it for me is supposed to be really good and he is well known in the club so that is a bonus. If I do actually grenade the engine then yes it will definitely get a crate, not sure about the EFI as I would like to leave the hood scoop functional ;)

Dude, a black fiberglass cast? You should totally trick that thing out!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but you'll be walking again in no time. :)

Oh wow... looking at the things that did it you are pretty lucky its not worse! And pretty soon it will be a distant memory that will be some story you tell. It really really sucks, but at least it WILL heal.

I saw a friend lose his finger back in november. That was a strange thing... thinking... crap. That will never heal.

Sorry, not trying to make things depressing, it's not. He didn't cry or anything (a freakin trouper... I could see him in 300 or something, lol) and it's now the common butt of jokes. Like... he only gives special people high 4s. :)

LMAO nice one, I have to go back today to have it checked again and they said that they will pin it, cast it or splint it. I actually thought about getting a red cast next if they go that route and air brush it to look like Hell Boy's hand :P

Ill let you know how I make out today ;)
