i'd likely add a pci-express vid card, and a 500w power supply.

If the power supply on it isnt already 500watts i want to know why not lmao. my old Pentium 4 has a 450watt power supply on it stock. Most of the gamers are pushing for 1 Killowat powersupplys these days.

Id also just get it with whatever video card it comes with can get an aftermarket card with your favorite chispet on it for probly the same price they upcharge anyways.

I got a Gateway from Bestbuy in Dec, quickly upgraded to Vista and got a new monitor, but it has been rock solid so far. I also upgraded from one to two gig or RAM and added an ATI video card since i was heavy into gaming.

why isn't it already a monster power supply? because it's a pre-fab machine. you compromise in one way or another whether you build it from scratch, or buy pre-fab. so i cut my losses, and bought the machine, a 256M nvidia card that will tap into the system menory as well. potentially running at 512M. the power supply is a 500w for $30 after rebate.

tomoorow i'll buy an extra 1G of ddr2 dual channle memory to allow for the viddeo demands.

glad to hear that ;}

amd or intel?

this is about as fast a machine as i could get outside of buying a quad core CPU... i am happy so far.

though i haven't gotten too far past creating an initial set of restore disks...

ETA: it's so quiet it makes me nervous ;}

What i was asking why isnt it already 450 or 500 watts with an upgrade above that level not to it. 30 bucks is cheap but mind as well bump it and the price as the shelf model. Unless its an energy efficient model back in the day Anything that used a Penitum 4 or an Athlon and used an agp (or pci express these days) card that required a second power conenctor recommended atleast a 450 watt power supply. Hell my old gateway celeron 300mhz machine had a 300 watt power supply.

A basic machien doesnt need much power anyways add multipel drives a graphics accelerator, then yea you need it. I figure it would be normal these days for the core duo and the newer amd lines that are aimed for energy efficiency to be equiped with power supplys not capable of such output capacity. Thats all im getting at.

I have CS2 on Vista Home Premium 64bit working okay. Vid card upgrade is what will force the PSU upgrade.

Im basicly on the limit witht he video card im running now.

Back on my 486 along time ago what pushed me to upgrade the PSU was using 4 Hard drives and 2 scsi cd roms. Forget what was in there stock but it just couldnt handle the load.

I used CS2 on Vista Ultimate Beta 2 and RC1 only issue was the logo transparency was silly.
