I was hoping to add a lens with a bit more reach. I currently have the Nikon 70-200mm lens and love it but would like a lens with a bit more reach. I know the Nikon 200-400 would be the best choice, but that's a bit out of the price range. I have a few ideas (below) and would greatly appreciate any opinions, experience, thoughts, or comparisons.

Nikon 80-400mm VR f/4.5-5.6 - My concen here would be the slower AF speed

Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 - Most of the reviews I have read have been good

Tamron 200-500mm f/5-6.3 - Seems to be too good of a deal in terms of focal lenght for the price.

Nikon 70-200mm + 2x teleconverter - Definately the cheapest alternative, but I have seen mixed reviews on the 2x teleconverter. I have the 1.4x but would like more reach.

Thanks!

You could get a 300mm f/4 prime. I have used one for a bit and it is excellent.

Sigma 50-500 might be an option?

There is a Sigma 100-300mm f/4 EX HSM for around $800. Pop a 1.4x on that and you'd have a 140-420mm f/5.6 which is not any slower and in some cases faster than all the ones you've listed.

Edit: Linky, this is for the Canon version though but there is a Nikon mount version of it.

I actually had this lens with the D70 and maybe I just had a bad one from the lot, but it was very soft and the AF was pretty terrible so I got rid of it. I guess I could test drive another one and see how it feels

There's one for sale on FM right now and he has 100% crops from it and with the 1.4x tc that look pretty sharp!

edit: asking $700
