I started photography with the goal of learning everything on my own. Using my past model experiences, reading, and asking questions. Yesterday I went to the Barnes and Noble looking for a book about lighting...I didn't want a book on how to light, but what lighting does for effect and emotions to your photo. There isn't anything like that. All I found was books on how to set up studio lights. Telling you what equipment to use ect.

That isn't what I'm looking for. Anyone know of any good books or websites or something that can talks about the way lighting can add effect or bring out emotions and stuff like that?? Fashion lighting??

Thanks.

Some of these may be helpful, Anthony; but none are exactally what you asked for. I think the best way to see how lighting effects an image is to look at LOTS of images, decide for yourself what mood is being created, then study the lighting and try to emulate it. Clues to the light set-up can be found in the eyes of portraits, and in the pattern of light/shadow in the image. Also a lot of experimentation will help. You may also be ready to start learning from the pros to expand your knowledge. If you join your local affiliate of PPA, you will have access to many pro workshops and events which can be amazingly helpful to get you to that next step in your work.

I don't have this book, but it's pretty popular over on the stobist.
Light, Science and Magic
Just noticed that is the newest edition. You can probably grab an old edition and not go to far wrong.

I have a previous edition and unless they've completely changed the content provided it does not provide the information the OP asked about. Good book on lighting though.

That is kind of funny, Last time I went to a Barnes and Nobel was to find a book on how to set up the lights positions etc as well as poses and techniques. At that time all they had were a couple of books that described how lighting effects your photos. Pretty much exactly what you were looking for. Wanna trade B&N Stores? :-)

thanks Cindi, I actually have considered that. I was planning on working with a fashion photographer whom I shot with as a model, but his photography is currently on hold. So I guess it would be time to start moving towards workshops.

albc28, did you find one? I'm curious about this question too. Looks like it would be good knowledge to have.
