Day 6
07/06/2007 04:55:09 PM · #277
Okay.......I have seen a bunch of comments, not by my take incorrect, but different, and I'd like to explore something.

This is one of my favorite pics I have *EVER* shot, and precisely for the soft focus and the muted colors.

I love the greys and browns in the background, and that soft color just really does it for me.

I have this framed in my bedroom and I see it virtually every day.

In many cases, my muted presentations are as I want them.

I *do* want input as to how to make them better, it's just I may not always like the result.

FWIW, I entered this in the Postcard challenge and was informed in no uncertain terms that this was NOT a good pic for a postcard.

The funny thing is that I am always huntiong for the sublime and unusual if I ever do send postcards, and I'd buy a box of these in a heartbeat.

So......I got one of those 4X6 adhesive backs that's a postcard and sent it across the country to a fellow DPCer.

My @$$ it ain't a postcard!

Just so I understand what you're saying here, you want to explore how people might see an image differently, and you're warning us that even though you like the input, you may not find it all that useful or to your taste? Right?

That's pretty normal. We all see things differently. For some images this difference becomes more pronounced, others the perception seems to be more even across the board, but still often different from viewer to viewer. I don't think it's anything to worry about or get upset over. For myself, I try to accept [most] comments with gratitude for the person that takes the time and say something about my photo - a few here and there seems to be designed to be hurtful, but they're rare.

As for you sticking to your guns, hey, that's a sign of maturity :) I think in the end we all need to figure out what works for us. Advise on how to do it better is helpful, but it is YOUR picture, YOUR view, YOUR art, and in the end, only YOU will make the decision of what works for you. He, he, he, in some cases, what works for you will not work for very many other people, but, c'est la vie :)

I have read the terms tone mapping and contrast mapping. What exactly are they and what tools do you use? (If the answer is too involved a new thread could be started. I don't want to take away from the flowers!)

There are quite a few threads that deal with these issues:

tone mapping threads

contrast mapping

(and probably more)

Oh dear...I hope I haven't made any comments that have offended someone. My apologies if I have. I appreciate the comments on my photo's especially when they see something I haven't that can make the image more pleasing. Will try not to nit pic in the future.

I love your comments. Keep it up.

There's way too little commenting going on the way it is, the last thing we need is for people to start chickening out even more. :(

Thank you Ursula. I knew someone would point me in the right direction.

As for comments, I sometimes agree and sometimes disagree, but either way I usually learn something. I truly appreciate any comment that is made with the intent to share--and most are, especially in this thread.

This challenge has become more than just a place to share photos with a common theme, and I hope it continues!

YAY!! John, that is WONDERFUL news! You should GRIN GRIN GRIN!!! Take out your wife & dance & sing! It is such a blessing to see life as though it may end & then to find, well, yes, it will, but later...
god bless you & your family! stay well...

Okay.......here's my actual shot from today....I think I'll be able to come up with as many as two weeks worth of lily variants!

I don't like the word warn in this context......more like apologize beforehand if a trick/technique/helping hand that you give me may not show up in my style for the long run. I'll try it and add it to my knowledge base and use it some time.

I want to learn EVERYTHING!!!!

That won't happen, but an awful lot of the type of photographer that I am today relative to technique is from what I've seen, and certainly learned, here.

Yeah.....and the best thing to do over a comment you don't like is to find the truth in it that pissed you off......8>)

I got my nose all out of joint over a comment once, tore off a scathing rebuke, and then had to eat my words later when I found out that the comment was more "On" than I wanted to see, and the commenter was trying to be helpful. I have found since him to be a good guy, and luckily, a decent and forgiving friend.

I guess what I was trying to say in the first place has more to do with the fact that I welcome any and all suggestions with any comments. I am so incredibly daunted by the amount of information I think I need to be barely competent at this stuff, much less accomplished.

When someone like Joe Dannels, or Pedro, or Robert, Gringo, or any of the host of others who willingly take the time, patiuently, with us neophytes (You too, Ursula!) I know I appreciate the heck out of it!

And there isn't a day goes by here at DPC that I don't learn something and/or see something different that I like.

I'll be reupping my membership here with great pride at having learned soooooooooo much in a year......and not having gotten chucked out, either!

Oh, PLEASE offend me some more with your comments!!!!!!8>)

No dear, your lovely comments are MOST welcome.

IMO, I NEED more gut level, and experienced suggestions to move forward in my learning. I would NEVER have tried curves on that lily pic with the spider if Robert wouldn't have suggested it. Show of hands for who thinks that one's better???? I thought so!.....8>)

I tried it some more, and I'm going to be less afraid of the curves now since I accidently did one that came out well.

What happens to me is that I don't get the real story on what I'm doing, luck into a nice effect, and then can never do it again!

Oh, cool. Since you like honesty, I guess I can say that I couldn't figure out from your first post if you were somewhat angry or what it was that you were trying to get at. :)

When it comes to commenting, I really wish for two things:

(1) to get comments where people tell what they really think about an image - my daughters are good at that, they tell me, "Hey, it's OK, but boring." Or, "Hey, that looks soooo cheesy!" Or, "Wow, I like that, funkeeee!" I don't always trust their judgment, but it's very helpful to get their reaction, because I tend to fall in love too much with my own stuff.

(2) to be able to give comments that are truly honest, and yet helpful. I chicken out of commenting way too often, because I keep thinking, it's just my opinion, who cares what my opinion is. And, because in the past when I've made comments that were honest (and trying to be helpful), people frequently don't take them too well. It's like I'm saying something nasty about their kid or so. And then others get on board (and even take sides at times) and it gets ugly. I don't like that. I don't quite know how to get around this.

Please don't chicken out when you comment on my images! I for one...care about your opinions and value them. Bear has some great ideas and opinions also. Keep em coming!

Day 6

I didn't get around to wildflowers of the Kootenays today :(, so I posted a few garden flowers. I made the picts in May and June, finally got around to editing them now.

Well...I had a dismal day of photography. I lost the manual for my camera many moons ago. Found it on the web and decided I would take a stab at manual instead of automatic! Kind of like stabbing in the dark I guess. I think I'm much better off staying in "Auto mode" for the time being.
