Here's a useful Ohio Law I just found:
Full text of the Law
Section 2331.12
General Assembly: 100.
Bill Number: House Bill 1
Effective Date: 10-1-53
No person shall be arrested during a sitting of the senate or house of representatives, within the hall where such session is being held, or in any court of justice, during the sitting of such court, or on Sunday, or on the fourth day of July.
Just for that, maybe I WILL buy those "illegal" fireworks!! |

Sorry to try to make this a "dumb laws" thread but in OHIO:
It is illegal to get a fish drunk. |

So, what would happen if a group of tourists are standing in the same area and photographing the same thing? Would the cop ask to see all of our permits?
I'm glad I live in Missouri and we don't have to deal with this kind of stuff!!! |

I have this funny image in my head:
Get a pro photog with portable studio lights, backdrop, etc and about 10 assistants. Set everything up at a location, drop it in place, take a few shots, and then just pick everything up, move 100 feet down the sidewalk, and put it down. Take another 10-20 shots, and then move again after 9 minutes. According to the rules, this would be completely legal, and really funny to watch, kind of like a speed photography competition... |

Are you sure you don't? How would you know? How would you find out? Who would you ask? Have you ever thought to check?
I think that's what bothers me the most; the relatively obscure laws that a normal person wouldn't even think about existing. |

A better NY law:
Women may go topless in public, providing it is not being used as a business.
woohoo! |

Hope you're growing your beard! "In Missouri, a man must have a permit to shave." (//www.strangefacts.com/laws.html)
;)
eta, I believe Colorado has your state beat... "In the state of Colorado, a pet cat, if loose, must have a tail-light !"

One more NY law: A license must be purchased before hanging clothes on a clothesline. |

Yes, but only if you set them off "within the hall where such session is being held, or in any court of justice." lol

Quoted "The film office held a public hearing on the proposed rules yesterday, but no one attended. The only written comments the department received were from the civil liberties group, Ms. Cho said."
I wonder if the hearing was advertised. If so, what paper? Why did nobody show up?

I'm waiting for the large group of Japanese tourists to get hassled in Times Square. hehe |
I would pay good money to be standing in a doorway somewhere photographing that!
Leroy, have you gone to any of the GTGs yet? At least in DC we're like a very slow moving ameoba (constantly changing in size). |

eta: Have a NY GTG and hang around places for as long as you want snapping pics. Just pretend you don't know each other.

If I were going to NYC with a group, I'd print a copy of that article and hi-light some parts. Like this one;
Julianne Cho, assistant commissioner of the film office, said the rules were not intended to apply to families on vacation or amateur filmmakers or photographers.
Just in case. |

Careful! That may not be legal in Califoria....
"The law states that more than 3000 sheep cannot be herded down Hollywood Blvd. at any one time. " |

So if you drink like a fish in Ohio, do you have to stick to O'Douls? |

So if you and a handful of other paparazzi know that Brad Pitt is staying at a particular hotel in Times Square, then you're not allowed to camp out together on the sidewalk for a few hours with your equipment waiting for him to stroll by with one of the kids in a stroller? Oh, what a pity.
Seriously, look at the requirements (groups of 2+ in one place for 30 minutes OR groups if 5+ with a tripod in one place for 10 minutes). Solo photographers will slip under the radar. A pro with a tripod and a bikini model in Central Park or Times Square will be exempt by the letter of this one. It looks to me like an attempt (a) to require permits for commercial photographers who bring along an entourage of assistants and models and (b) to discourage paparazzi from bothering its many famous residents.
That seems to be the spirit of the law, and I think both of those applications are fair. It's not so different from obtaining a filming location permit from what I can tell. However, I do think the language needs to be clarified so that tour groups full of amateurs don't get nailed by someone with their panties in a twist.

If a woman in NYC goes topless, and there's no one there to photograph it, did it really happen?
What is the sound of a digital shutter snapping?
...and other Koan brought to you by zen photography... |

You mean you don't think it has any application or relevance to the Indian Film maker who was hand-holding a camcorder when he was detained? Huh. Go figure. How could one act and a lawsuit lead our sensible government leaders to make loosely defined and irrelevant restrictions on individual rights?! (That last question was rhetorical, btw.) |

Probably nothing since you'd be in a National Park and not on city property. Now if you were waiting on a public street, say Broadway, to buy your theater tickets....
It's the idea that the city can take away the public's right to use public property in normal ways...e.g. stopping to admire the scenery, gathering in a group for a conversation...that bothers me. There are already laws in place that cover assembly, disturbing the peace, endangering the safety of others, etc. I don't see why the municipality of NYC needs to go further than that and, essentially, secure for itself the rights granted to private property owners.
