from downloading from camera to archiving.

would be grand to hear from you :)

anyone?

from downloading from my camera I just copy the images off my cf card where I want them. Then I use aperture to manage my photos and edit them if I want. From there if I want to do more extreme editing then I will use CS3.

Mine all load into iPhoto .. then I change to .tiff and work on them in CS3 .. pretty simple .. knowing my luck it won't be the right way to do things but I don't enter the challenges often so I'm not worried :)

I don't want to ignore you, but my workflow sucks..I load into iphoto, and organize by months and try to remember to copy into my external drive and I think I have dvd's lying around here somewhere...maybe under that pile over there...

:)
Rob, are they downloading from CF card straight into iphoto?
and do you just keep your edited files in the months pics?

I download onto desktop and copy straight to DVD. Then I import into Apeture (used to be iPhoto before I got Apeture). I make minor straightening, and color adjustments in Aperture, then I export pics that need more work or that I want to play with into Photoshop.

I shoot 12meg jpg most of the time, so raw isn't involved.
If they are anything important, I first copy them directly to a DVD from the card in order to have a direct copy for archive. I just insert a DVD and name it before I connect the card reader, then connect the card reader and drag the pic files to the DVD and burn using the "Burn" icon by the DVD icon in "finder".
I normally download to iPhoto and use slideshow to eliminate the clunkers. Using "slide show" I can view them full screen and rate the ones that I think will be ok with a "one".
I then go thru the "ones" by using "view" " sort by rating" to get them all in one group.
Any photos needing touch up or major adjustments are copied to Graphic Converter for that, then back to iPhoto for easy access and handling.
I back up, full size, all images that I want to keep each day to an external hard drive, and then back up to DVD every couple of weeks.
iPhoto library at the moment has over 14K images in it, but I seem to have no problem finding any one that I want. I use "view" and "sort by date" most of the time, and have many "albums" for image groups like weekend trips, or "pics for Aunt B" ect to make it easy to locate an image.
A good trick to find an image is to select one that you know is in about the same time period in iPhoto using "organize" and large image size, and then hold the up or down scroll arrow down. The pics will flip thru at about 5 or so per sec, and you can pick out the one you are looking for right away out of a couple of hundred or so.
If you have the name, title, or camera id of an image or an album, you can open " finder" and type that into the "Local Discs" Q window, and it will find it for you.
I also found that I can put a huge number of images on a CD if you down size them by "exporting" them from iPhoto at reduced size to hard drive B, then insert a CD and copy them from there to the CD using cut and paste. I have put over 2K images on one CD that way at 640 pix res.
I am not a pro by any measure, but this works for me, and maybe something of the post will be helpful.

> copy from card to HD
> add suffix name to folder if relevant (to help searches)
> import to Aperture as referenced files
> add batch keywords (for searching/categories)
> rate images in one pass to separate wheat from chaff
> make album of choices
> export web gallery (sometimes)
or
> export chosen files as full size JPG for editing (if in-cam shot is close to desired outcome)
or
> export to CS3 for full 16bit RAW editing

Finally:
Make a backup of all key images to DAT tape and further HDs if relevant. I have access to 1TB and a 2TB drive thankfully but it's getting silly!

Is this wise to import to iPhoto. Doesn't iPhoto converts to jpeg?

iPhoto does not touch or alter originals in any way. If you do edit an image within iPhoto, it edits a copy and preserves the original for all time, and reverting to the original is just a click away. iPhoto is a very well-behaved and friendly photo management system.

put card in reader, open with finder, select which photo is good, open with photoshop, edit, make folder per concept, save as *whatever*, copy the one photo I needed into the concept-folder, done.

iPhoto? Bridge?

Sorry. Not for me.

iphoto junkie as well. Would love a nice version control for photos - Aperture is just OK, but there's no relation to the photo mods (like a version tree)

Usually edit in iphoto, but depends on what I need to do something more I use photoshop elements. Often do final re-size in Graphic Converter...

I shoot RAW only except when we have a minimal editing challenge!
- iView Media Pro to import and stuff in IPTC/metadata
- make selects by tagging with numbers/colors
- sometimes move to another folder called "picks"
- any renaming is done in iView with its great utility

If I need quick unedited cutdowns I use iView's very fast routine.
Then sometimes I run them through PS CS2's image processor to enhance slightly with a combo action

-For more serious batching on smaller groups it's slow but powerful DxOPro into DNG, then Bridge for cropping and refining. I used to have DxO output to JPG but it's way more powerful to have it make DNGs then whack on it some more in CS's RAW processor.

In my world, iPhoto is for albums for presentations/clients and for the slideshows with music. iView has a nice slideshow feature for client proof reviews, but no music.

IView is now MS Expressions or somesuch. I just pray that it will stay a worthy product. Am tempted to try Image Ingester as a way to streamline my workflow...when there's time to mess around, Peter Krogh (of the DAM book) recommends it.

- download RAW files with FW card reader/ImageCapture to RAWOriginals folder > ~Home folder > Pictures folder
- view and trash images in CS2 Bridge with the above folder selected
- edit (or decide to abandon edit and trash) image with PS CS2 Camera RAW
- enter or batch/enter file info, convert to 8-bit and flatten image
- save/name TIFF to Tiffs folder > ~Home > Pictures

Like lynnesite, I use iPhoto for private albums/silideshows, some presentations, to order prints and publish books.
