Good Morning!

I joined the Digital SLR club this Xmas when my wife suprised me w/the 300D. She purchaed it at Best Buy where they also got her to buy a card reader. The salesperson told her that this was a good thing to have because after time, the camera would somehow lose resolution from being hooked up directly to the computer. This sounds like BS to me but I figured it can't hurt to get some other opinions.

Thanks,

Jb

I've never heard of losing resolution... but 300D direct to computer is very slow. It took me 50 mins to transfer a full 512mb card, but now I have a card reader it takes around 2-3 minutes

I use one also as I don't want to put ware and tear on my camera. Plus as mentioned above, it's real fast copying everything down. There only around 19 bucks also.

You won't lose resolution (that is BS indeed) however buying a card reader is an excellent idea because it's faster. You'll shoot more pics that way.

Also, if you have a still-life setup with the camera in the perfect position, you can just take the card to the computer if you wanna check your shots, rather than moving the camera.

I also got a 300D for christmas, seems to have been a popular thing, given my husband had a real hard time finding one. I also don't know about the resolution thing, but I'd read this in a previous thread:Software Installation

and decided to get the card reader anyways. I'm all about instant gratification and HATE to wait! :) Besides, they aren't that expensive and so far I think it's well worth it.

I hope you're enjoying your camera as much as I am. You don't know what it's like going from a .85 megapixel camera to a 6.3. AAHHHH THE POWER!!! HAhaha...

Thanks to all for the input. Looks like I'll keep it if just for the speed aspect. Hope you all have a great New Year and happy shooting...

I had the same experience. For some reason the 512mb card I got at the same time as my camera didn't work in the SanDisk reader I already owned, so I had to transfer my first batch from the camera (50 mins). I returned that card the next day and got a SanDisk card instead, thinking it would be most likely to work in my reader (which it does).

Congrats to you both Jeff and Jennifer - well come to team 300D! :-)

I also use the card reader for downloading off the card - using the camera is much too slow. I have a SanDisk card and a Lexar card - both work fine with the SanDisk reader.

I got a card reader for Christmas, and love it. The camera was SO slow, and if I was messing with it for any length of time, the battery ran down.

Got my 300d just before xmas and love it.
A card reader sounds like a must have. I didn`t realize it would be so much quicker.
Will look on ebay.
Thanks..

you dudes out there are so lucky, im broke and stuck with my s5000. actually i would not think that card readers will prevent wear and tear. see, removing and inserting the cf card over and over again is more damaging than pluging and unpluging the cable, at least thats what i think. and theres no possible reason for the cam to lose res by hooking up to the com.

lose resolution... haha, cute :)

Jesse James, I agree with the unplug/plugin wear....
but the convinience is what makes me unplug/plugin.

I use a pcmcia-cf adapter.
