I've had this problem since my airline dropped my camera bag. The focus seems to get jammed if I try to focus below 10 feet (durring auto and manual focus). I mean, the focus ring moves freely, but it doesn't grip the actual glass before 10 feet.

Other than send it to canon, what can I do?

Nothing - it's broken and needs repair.

I had the exact same problem with the same lens -- a bump to the moving front end of the lens seems to cause this problem. I sent it in to Canon and they fixed the focus problem, but in the process of fixing it, they messed up the diaphragm so it wouldn't stop down (though the camera thought it was stopped down, thus overexposing all my shots -- took me a while to figure it out!).

Good luck with the repair!

Yow, that's my favorite lens; I'll be more careful with mine.
