Next weekend I want to shoot a Tae Kwon Do session which is to be held in a school gyn. I don't have anything other than my in-cam flash to work with and it's not really appropriate to use flash at these events anyway, so I'm going to have make do with ambient light. The lighting isn't too bad and I reckon a combination of around f/2.8, ISO 800 and 1/180 should work OK. Problem is, the only lens I have that'll go to f/2.8 is my 50mm prime and I don't think that'll be long enough. Suggestions anyone? I'd prefer not to have to purchase a new lens, but if anyone knows of a cheap, fast lens around the 100mm mark I'd consider it.

Ta,

Qiki.

That was my first thought, but I can't find anywhere that rents Pentax.

You can try Plaza Cameras Adrian as I know they loan out lenses, but not sure about Pentax!

Thanks mate. Already checked their website and they only hire lenses for Canon and Nikon. Not surprising really as most of the hire gear is high end stuff, which I guess pros would need.

Just a thought....

I know you mentioned that flash is not appropriate at the venue, and that is very understandable.

A lot of venues discourage flash because of obvious reasons.

However, is it possible to rig a flash above the area where the athletes will be in competition.

The reason I ask is because in pro arenas here in the USA at least, they offer hard wired flash, built into the structure of the building, that is above the area where the athletes perform.

This gives the pro photographer a chance to get better light levels, while in conjunction with a fast lens, and ambient light.

It reasons to ask if you can do the same thing.

All you would need to do then is rent a pocket wizard set up, an external flash, and what ever else you need to rig the flash above the area.

Of course, you would need permission, a few hours to rig, and testing to make sure you are getting what you want.

Hell, if it is possible, maybe a few flash's ringing the area.

Monopod. Shoot in RAW, or what Pentax has.

I'm not certain how close you can get if the 50mm will be close enough. You might want to look at renting a lens (I don't know where in your neck of the woods).

Good luck

Edit: Stupid grammer errors.

Hey Quiki,
Try Camera Electronic or PRA. They hire-out gear.

BTW...the 1/180 Tv may be a tad too slow...when the fists and feet start flying they move quick...so lots of motion blurr with lower Tv.

Good luck mate...hope to see some shots.

Have you ever shot a Tae Kwon Do session before? I believe your 50mm prime will do just fine bing that most martial art demonstrations and tournaments don't use more than 64' x 64' area unless weapons are involved. Remember you have a 1.5x modifier with your camera making it a 75mm equivalent. Just don't be afraid of getting closer, like in the front row or just out side of the used area.
