I am new to DPC and I have yet to enter a photo, but I have been rating a lot of photos and leaving a lot of comments. I just found that I can look at all of the comments I made and see if people found them as helpful. So, when I looked back through them, I found that if you say something simple that is good, such as "I love it" or "Great Photo" it is almost always marked as helpful, while "I do not see how this fit's the challenge, but it is a good photo", "This subject does not appeal to me" and "Too much detail is lost and distorted" are not marked as helpful. It seems to me that some people just want to be praised. I guess I should expect nothing else when you get a large group of people together. Some people just want to hear how wonderful they are.

When I was growing up, my second grade teacher told me something that has stuck with me for the rest of my life "Mistakes are the only way you learn." From that day forward I have lived my life differently. I am less afraid to make mistakes and I am much less offended when people criticize me for making them. In fact, that is what I want. Sure, it is great to hear that I am doing wonderfully. But even better is when people tell you that what you are doing could be done better and they tell you what they would do to make it better.

I guess this sounds a little like a rant, but I am not angry. I just would like to see a discussion on commenting on photos. In fact, I would like to start a movement. If you take the time to leave the comment "Great photo!", look around for a few more seconds. See if there is something that you could change to make it better. "Great photo, wish it had a little more color" is much more helpful. IMO the photos that need criticism the most are the good photos. How else are people going to make the improvement from good to great?

This site would be amazing if people left one CRITICAL comment for every one they received.

You'll find many people that agree with you. That is, many times it is, as you say, more helpful to suggest areas of improvement.

However, it's okay to also just enjoy a shot without suggesting improvement.

Just keep commenting. :)

Welcome!

It's good to have you here. Keep on commenting please. If I'm looking for 'great shot' etc I'll show my work to friends and family. The ability to get critique and feedback from a worldwide online audience as we have here at dpc is such a great learning tool ...... gives you a chance to find out what works, what doesn't, how to improve.

Thank you! And don't forget to get your feet wet and enter a challenge :))

Well said.

I always mark the comments helpful. There have been a few times though, that I have thought about marking it at all. I read what they say, and

then I think,"How does that help me"? For example, the comment "ok". I mark it helpful anyway. Any feedback is helpful right. Why does this

little check box exist anyway. Is it just a toy for our minds to play with and keep our attention off of what we really need to be concerned about..............which is global warming in my opinion. Big jump huh. lol. Once all the tragedies start to happen we will have a lot of things

to document if our cameras don't get destroyed somehow. But then if we don't have power our computers won't work. DPC will be history! Help save

DPC by using your own shopping bag at the grocery store, buy fluorescent lights, put a brick in your toilet, if your clothes start to wear out wear them a little longer until they really can't be used, And the big one,

Stop driving our gasoline powered cars causing an atmospheric oil spill which is the biggest oil spill of all, straight into the air we and the planet breathe.

Wow I don't know why I said this here but whatever. We are the planet. we are not separate from the planet. We are killing ourselves by killing the planet.

Wow ssodell... that was action packed!... As for the comments. I agree. and i personally like getting criticism better than "Lol, Funny!" or "Wow. good shot" or "Nice!" i might be weird but i prefer. "Wow, that sucks, try moving the subject left" or "Not bad, but it should have more kick, try boosting contrast"

I feel better when i can figure out how to make it better...

thats just me...

now my personal goal is to leave more comments... i dont leave nearly enough.

If it makes you feel any better, I went through your 100 most recent comments (the ones made on the Why challenge), and looked at the ones that had not been marked helpful.

On almost all of them, the photographer either had not (yet) marked ANY of the comments on the entry helpful, or had not marked any of the most recent comments (where yours was one of the most recent). There were only two where the photographer had skipped your comment (and in one case, one other as well).

To me, it looks like the vast majority of your comment recipients appreciate constructive criticism.

I haven't read this whole thread (yet), but I have one in a current challenge now that is a little on the negative (read constructive or preferences) side from you and I have already marked it helpful. After seeing your comment I looked at the photo again and agree (partially) with your assessment. :-)

Thanks for the comment jjwoolls.

i have simple rule ... if commenter is specific what he/she loves/hates about the photo i mark it useful, "great shot" comments and similar i tent to leave unmarked

is this okay or okay ? :-)

Welcome, Friend! I agree with your premise completely.

Only helpful criticism can create necessary improvement in photographers. I was a better-than-average avid amateur film photographer for over twenty-five years, but I have seriously struggled with digital.

O, I still know how to make the capture, but taking captured jpeg to excellent photo that gets rave reviews on just about any computer monitor has been an insanely HARD process for me.

Yet if I have ANY expertise at all, then I credit DPC with being my "teacher." (When I came here I didn't even know how to resize & save for web. That was Christmas, 2005.) The immediate feed-back I get from the comments have been my greatest single resource in improvement.

I admit to a tendency to "thin skin", but DPC has "toughened" me somewhat. In addition, DPC has taught me how easy it is to lose friends and respect by not considering what I write when I share my views.

Bottom Line: Thank You DPC for going to the trouble to comment intelligently on my photos & for policing my "actions" with surgical accuracy that I might improve as a person.

Yeah, as I got a little deeper into the quotes I noticed that there were a lot of the ones not marked as helpful were from people that had not left feedback on any of the comments they have received recently. I was not intending to sound like I was griping about people "Appreciating" my comments. It sounds a little rude, but I really do not care if they appreciate them. I never say anything just to be hurtful but I want to be truthful and unfortunately, the truth sometimes hurts.....

As far as entering a challenge, I am looking forward to it. I already have one for the free study this month. Unless I have something better come along, I am going to enter it for sure. Today I was trying to get pictures for the Candid challenge when out on patrol, but we didn't have time for a foot patrol, so most of my pictures came from a moving vehicle.
