"Critics call this a waste of money"

How much did they spend on the etch-a-sketch anyways? lol

My 6 year old could have given them something better for just a box of go-gurts.

Cause Vancouver's is so much better...

Trivia: the Vancouver logo was inspired by the local landmark featured in my March free study entry:

Thrilling, I know...

well it does have some modern flair to it.
afaik, the olympics logo had always (almost) been serious and boring.

£400,000 that supposedly cost - I wonder how many hospital beds that could have provided?

What is that? Lije $8 US? Don't worry guys, it wasn't that much after all. You can make $8 in 25 minutes or so.

:)

Google says it is $794,240 USD. That should take an average of about 14 years for someone in our country to make.

Designer: Crunches up sketch and tosses it in trash can

Client: Hey wait a minute. That's our logo!

Designer: What do you mean?

Client: There in the trash all crumpled up. Lets go with that look!

Designer: Oh. Ok that will be $794,240.

Not knowing the origins of the London logo, I truly cannot make any comments on it other than it is not appealing to me and seemingly has no redeemable historical value.

The Vancouver logo on the other hand does have a very distinct meaning, as it is a depiction of an item well know to anyone having travelled in the arctic, namely the "Inukhuk"

The Beeb has a bunch of user submitted alternatives, most of which are way better than the official rubbish. I like the street sign one a lot, though it prolly doesn't convey "Olympics" as well as some of the others.

ETA: From el Reg ...
For the record, the logo was designed by Wolff Ollins, which works in the "reinvention business". The company's previous notable reinventions include BT's infamous trumpet bloke - a rebrand which cost a paltry £50m and was eventually dumped for a £5m rehash of the BT Openworld brand frontage.

So, a company with a proven track record of rubbish logos then : )

What the hell was wrong with the Olympic bid logo, the one with the shape of the River Thames running through it. That was fantastic.. iconic, related to the city.. just perfect.

not that it matters as the whole olympics will be a balls up from start to finish, run HUGELY over-budget (again) and is just something so those in power can pat each other on the back for a job well done..

Let Sydney, Australia have it every 4 years, probably the most enjoyable, and if we believe the social commentators, the most successful ever.

Let face it as well, the way this country is going, we will hand out medals to all the event participants regardless of where they finish so as not to offend anyone and hurt the feelings of the less successful. Oh, and to view the events us taxpayers will have to fork out, in some cases, more than £100 for a ticket to the stadium, whereas immigrants and dole scroungers will get huge concessions as Ken Livingstone thinks "the olympics should be available to all regardless of class".

Fuckwit.
