Interview with Ritz Employee on 'Scams' here...

Interesting interview about dealing with Ritz. Some of it is common sense, but it's still an interesting read.

...and another article about Ritz from May.

Happy reading!

I dunno... nothing too serious there. I wouldn't call any of those items "scams" (a tactic set up to defraud people).

If I were a hardware vendor with classes on the side, for sure I would gear those classes to sell my hardware first. Answer questions about what else is out there, sure, but I'd be pushing my own products because ... that's what makes the most economic sense. Businesses exist to make a profit.

The return policy thing is a little iffy ... but again, it's not like a "bait and switch" type of scam.

I've shopped at Ritz Camera for years and, although I don't like their prices, they have always matched prices for me. I bought my 5D for $2999 at a time when it was going for much more (and got the $300 rebate on top of that) because Ritz matched prices with a vendor that was low-balling it.

I've also bought a lot of gear at Wolf (one of the 3 'ritz' shops as I recall). Prices are higher than buying online of course, but not waiting for shipping, being able to drive 5 minutes and immediately return/exchange a lense - it's all worth it. Never felt ripped off, never had a bad time.

Umm, their corporate return policy is fine, it's what the store managers are telling their people to do, charge a non-existent re-stocking fee, that is NOT fine.

I worked for Wolf Camera every summer and christmas while I was in college and some of this stuff seems really ridiculous. Maybe its just up in Maryland but we never charged anyone for returning something. If we lost a commission, oh well, hopefully we were helpful enough that they would still buy from us. I only heard a couple of the classes but I didn't hear any hidden sales pitch for Quantaray, but it is a perfectly legit business practice(althought it would seriously pain me to hear someone actually recomending a 55-200 f4-5.6).
There was never any controversy about matching prices, we never did internet, and we always matched any store remotely close. On the second, read, it said that you wouldn't get the same camera back if yours is completely destroyed while under the damage protection plan. Not true, you'll get your same camera unless it isn't made anymore, in that case you would get the closest comparable one. It won't take two weeks, more like 4 or 5 but you really can demolish one and they'll take care of you.
