Come on - giving comments on more then 500 pics is crazy.
especially when you see pics that you know the person who posted them didn't take as much time with the pic as you do commenting on it.
I keep my comments normally short and give them mostly to pictures I like.
I am no great photographer and no expert on technicality so who am I to correct someone's els photo. and anyway I always wondered how really helpful the comments are. I had pictures (and seen the same things on other people pictures) where one would write not sharp enough and another would write that's to sharp, one would write to dark and the other too bright etc etc.

MattO I didn't stay up for 24 hours....I actually had them finished within 18 hours of the challenge...and I did sleep during that time. I guess that means I spent even less time on each image. Maybe so. I know what I see...I know what I like. I judge many a photo comp in reality...and while I am judging I record my findings on a recorder...in front of officials. I am extremely fast on the keyboard...so all this put together enables me to comment quickly...and in most cases....accurately. There will always be things that I miss. Even on my own images....others point out things that I have missed. That is just being human. But what I gave you was just my opinion on an image in a challenge with over 600 others. Some of my judgings include written critiques that fill an A4 piece of paper for each entry. And I can fill that piece of paper just by viewing an image for 2 minutes. But that is a different type of judging to this set up.

All I can ask is that my comment has reached just one person. And judging by the PM's I have been getting...I have achieved my goal.

KarenNfld I apologize I have not left you other comments before. I used to comment and/or vote on all the challenges...but work got a little crazy. Sorry.

Oded Yep...there were some that made me wonder. But who am I to judge why they took the photo. The photo was there for me to vote and/or comment on. If that photographer chose to waste my time...then they are the ones that are losing...not me! I did my part...now it is up to them. Also...I answered a PM today about a similiar feeling to what you wrote...about different opinions. So I am going to write the same thing to you. And that is....."What I gave you was my opinion only. There are millions of opinions out there...! You can listen to them all...but the most important thing is to listen to yourself."

In general...I am sorry for getting upset and removing my portfolio...I will put it back today. hihosilver made a very valid point. One that I hadn't thought about. And as for the stubbornness ....I am sure if my family and friends heard you say that I was lacking stubbornness...they would die laughing. I am too stubborn...! So...again I am sorry. And thankyou for giving me a wake up slap.

Well done Judi for completing the mammoth task of commenting on every image in the open challenge! I tried to comment on all the images in another recent (smaller) challenge and failed so I have some idea how big a task it was. Some folks seem to forget who is doing who the service by voting and commenting. They also forget that it is a two way street.

JudiI'm going to add my thanks to the others who talked about your incredible feat of commenting on over 500 entries and in an amazingly short period of time. It's an extremely difficult task and one I suspect you did very well. (BTW I didn't have an entry in that Challenge)

Commenting is, perhaps, one of the most important aspects of this site.

Some people holler when they get ones they don't like.

But peoople holler most often and loudest when they don't get any at all.

You've proved once again that with some effort, quality commenting is alive and well.

I have to admit that I am full of wind, but attribute this affliction to a high fiber diet. :O)

Seriously though, I do need to work on my comments a lot more as they are woefully behind my votes cast.

Oh! That explains the "ok" comment I got. :P

Seriously, I got a comment from Judi! I like challenges like this.

I need to catch up on my commenting/ Not sure I can do all of them but should be able to match as many comments as I have received.

For the record...my 'old man' was at work the entire time that I was on the computer...and I had 3 children with me as it was over a Friday night and Saturday morning my time.

And I'm completely joking of course as I sincerely do appreciate your comment and vote on my free study image. That's quite a feet hitting all 600+ images.

Congratulations on your monumental effort. Consider the accomplishment: you commented on every image in the free study: It is indeed a feat. Now, what do all entrants expect, "Wow, what an image!" No. there are many that fall very short and the final tally will reveal their weakness. When we enter competition we expose our image to the voters. The majority speak with their numerical vote but shed very little light about the weakness of the image.

It is indeed a pleasure to have someone of your caliber express how an image affects you. The photographer stands to benefit if only he/she will listen. But yes, many complain endlessly about the lack of comments and then they complain again when they received them. I know how much effort is required to comment when doing an entire challenge. There are many strong images but then the majority simply fall short in composition and technique. If no one says nothing then they are bound to repeat the same misjudgement, since many feel that their low scores are somehow incorrect.

Again, Judi, congratulations. I tip my hat to fine people like you for taking the valuable time to make DPC the great place that it is.

Judi Ive always liked your positive attitude towards everything and the way you are always willing to help anyone who asks. Like me a short while back on a question I pm'd you about. ;) Also the time and effort you put in on commenting/voting in challenges and I commend you for this thread. I really hope you post your portfolio again as I always look forward to what you come up with next as I feel you are an amazing artist. And lastly I really like your up front no BS comments :)

I think alot of the problem with people's reactions to comments comes down to ego. If you take what you think is a perfect capture, and someone else says something that makes it not so perfect, you tend to have that initial gut reaction of being hurt and lashing back. Some are worse than others. The thing to remember though is that every one of us has a different eye to what we see as an amazing picture. And everyone's going to have a different technique to how they vote. If everyone of our pictures were a 10, why would we bother putting pics up for review?

I have to go thru photos for print ad layout all the time, and there's been alot of gorgeous pictures that I couldn't use because it just didn't work for that particular ad. It didn't make the photograph any less gorgeous.

The voting is done by opinion. Then you add on the Opinion of what you feel the challenge should be. So you've got Opinion + Opinion + X amount of time due to number of entries = Comment with Opinion Squared divided by emotions which = either a box of tissues or a koolaid smile. You can't please everyone, and everyone can't be pleased, no matter how hard you try.

Keep being you Judi :)
