I'm getting a bit spooked with my run of bad luck and cameras. Last year I dropped my 350D in a burn up Ben Ime (luckily got it fixed on insurance) and vowed never to take the "good" camera up the mountain again so bought a compact.
Last month I dropped the little Nikon 4100 on Liathach in Torridon and broke it. So logged on to ebay when I got back and bought an replacement same model.
Last weekend on it's first mountain up near Ben Nevis on the Ring of Steall I dropped it and watched it bounce 2000ft down a gulley and way beyond rescue. The most gutting thing about it was that I lost photos of the most stunning scenery in Scotland.
So, replacement replacement now, just got a Canon A75 to stuff in the rucksack and hopefully it'll survive long enough for me to post a few new pics.

I love my A95, same thing as the A75, which my brother has. It has a nearly identical menu system to your 350D, and swivel screens are great.
Try not to drop yourself down a cliff!

| I'd make sure the camera was tied to my back pack or myself at all times. I've had many times that my camera would have been a goner if I hadn't had it attached to me. |

| I was looking for the Canon G3 as a replacement (for the RAW) but they seem to go for quite a lot 2nd hand |

Funny, last night I dropped my Olympus for about the fifth time ... every little door popped open and the batteries were rolling around on the floor. But like those Eveready batteries or a Timex watch, it just keeps on t clicking ...
Those Canon A-series camera should be good pocket/backpack cameras.
Another option for a travel camera might be one which is waterproof -- Olympus makes some which can be out in the rain, and (I think it's) Pentax makes one which is reasonably-priced (c. $300 USD) which is actually waterproof down to 5-10 feet.

yikes, you are dropper mate!!
I'd suggest strapping the camera to your backpack or somehow having a non obtrusive cord between your belt and the camera.

Wrist strap!! Buy a wrist strap!! They saved 2 of my cameras before lol, was taking a picture straight down off a skyscraper and it slipped, luckily the wrist strap was on lol :D |

Your Canon most likely got jealous that you bought a Nikon and put a hex on it (Canon's are big into the voodoo thing). Maybe you'll have better luck with the Canon. :-) But seriously, sorry about the cams. That really bites.

Get a small carabiner and a cord. and attach it somewhere. You can also use it to take pictures by setting the self timer and lowering it places. just a idea off the top of me head.
