Can anyone tell me, what is the differences between the Rebel and 10D? Are the differences worth $600 +?

Start by taking the time to read this very thorough review, which while reviewing the 300D, goes into extensive detail about the differences between the 300D ("Digital Rebel") and the 10D.

After you've read the review, you should be able to tell if it is worth the extra money, since that answer is different for each person.

Major difference is that the Rebel has a plastic body and the 10D metal.
Check this link and this for lenseinfo.

In my opionion, if I had the money I woulda gone the 10D, but I decided to spend the money I had getting better lens and a lower body, than, lower lens and a higher body...
I beleive I made the right choice.
the things that were influencing me to go 10D were
The 1 stop higher iso is usable.
AI-servo focus (not what it thinks you want)
Light Metering options.
9 shot buffer (3 per second)

the 9 shot buffer (instead of 4) and the less noise was very influentual when deciding.
depends what you wanna do.
read the full dpreview (that eddy mentioned) and make your decision.

The 300D does not have the miror lock up function. I use it a lot when I do super close up macro shots, with available light and high F number. The miror lock up works like this: you click once ... the miror locks up. Wait a few seconds. Then click the second time ... the shutter opens and exposes the shot. This removes the camera shake caused by the miror getting out of the way. I use that function for exposures of longer than 1/60 sec. It wouldn't be the end of the worlkd, however I don't think I'd want to be without it.

There are numerous little differences; do read the review posted above (DPReview). After you've done that, you can navigate to the DPReview home page, click on "cameras", then on "side by side" (in yellow embedded in top paragraph). Select the 300D and 10D and take a peek, this is a good start at understanding the differences.
Also a specific comment regarding mirror lockup. The absence of this may be somewhat more problematic than it seems. The 300D uses a pentamirror, which is heavier than the mirror in the 10D, and this coupled with the lighter body will lead to more shake. Only of real concern under the conditions outlined by Jacko.
My personal opinion, which I've stated before is that photographers that want full creative control and feel they will explore all the technical features of a camera will be better served with the 10D. Either camera really needs top-quality glass to make it "shine", so over time your investment in lenses will most likley far oversahdow any proce difference in the body.

Great post, jaimeegrl. I'm considering getting a Canon, too, and have been interested in the Rebel and 10d. I'm also wondering if the price difference is really worth it for the 10d. Like cvt, I'm wondering if spending the difference on lenses for a Rebel would be better than buying the 10d. The 10d, from what I understand is better constructed and has a couple of features the Rebel doesn't have, though. Definitely check out the link that kirbic posted. I've been studying it myself and it's makes seeing the similarities and differences much easier.

I'm fairly new to photography (started in March 2003), myself, but believe I have some decent shots from my Nikon (although I'm certainly no pro! lol). I currently don't know a lot about cameras and all of the features but want something more manual so I can learn. Want to start taking a few photography classes to help me with that. Would I be crazy spending that kind of money to get the Rebel or 10d with so little experience? Or is it the perfect way to learn?

I'm also interested in what the Rebel and 10d owners have to say about their cameras. Great thoughts so far, guys. Anyone else? Has anyone had the opportunity to use both?

Thanks for your help and good luck jaimeeegrl!

This is only a very personal opinion, and I don't want to contradict the previous posts in any way at all.

I went the the local shop last week and tried out the rebel, 10ds and the nikon 100. The rebel felt so intuitive to me, so easy, so reflective of my needs that I was overwhelmed.

Of course, that was only after 10 minutes of playing around. After a week of serious study, I'm sure that the nikon and the 10ds will do far more than the rebel. The advice always given about how it feels in the hand may or may not be valid...
