so how about publishing a book...a dpc book...??
Maybe a postcard book with 20-30 postcards in it, that you can keep as a book or ripp them out and use them individualy...
We could have a special competition where we get a topic and the top photos get to be in the book...the prize would be (the honor ofcourse) and a copy of the book ... then it could be sold on dpcprints...
how about it???

I think it would be cool if DPC would start publishing a yearly book of all the years challenge photos. The winners being larger on the pages and the rest of the entries smaller. Sort of like a school year book. I think that would be cool. Maybe offer 2 books. One is the open challenge book and one being a members challenge book. That way your would be able to buy just the open challenge book if you aren't a member. I would also make the book sizes smaller w/52 challenges in the open challenge book and 52 + Speed Challenges in the Memebers book. I would buy them if they were offered.

Any thoughts?

postcardbooks would probably sell more easily than special dpc yearbooks...ofcourse a lot of us photographers would buy the yearbooks...but a lot of wisitors would buy the other kind...perfect gifts...great on the wall...cool on the shelf...donĀ“t take much room...cheep to ship...and then you can use them as birthdaycards and stuff like that
plus with special topics you can choose between the catbook or the carbook...you can get what you want basicly...we could really milk that one...
the challenges could have a non-date rule...so you can put the last year shot that was so perfect in there....

Who on Earth would buy it? Merit of the photos aside, all the photos are available on the website. Why would you buy the book?

Because I have a life and don't spend every second sitting in front of a computer

A "coffee-table" type book is an excellent idea!!
Also love the "post-card" idea.. perhaps another good way to advertise DPCprints :)... or yourselves :P

I'd be inclined to buy a book of selected photos.. as I have limited wall space.

These are cool ideas but still extraordinarily expensive to print in the quantities we'd want. The postcard idea might be affordable, but I'd want to sell subscriptions/advance purchase rights before printing them ... what might be more practical is an electronic book (Acrobat PDF?) which could be distributed on CD or by (big) download. Still would require significant time for design/layout/production, even without considering making the selections.

It's a great idea - whichever format.

Since quality would be paramount though I think those who feature should pay a fee. I think this could be organised through DPCPrints! (since all the shots are hi-res just waiting to be used) - discounted for Members and as an incentive for sign-up. People can then see some of the shots in all their glory and it may encourage more print purchases.

That could potentially severely reduce the quality of any such book.

Lets say it has 100 photos. Rather than being the best 100 photos it would be the "best 100 out of those willing to pay for the privilege". You might find you need to access the first 200 or 300 photos (maybe far more) to find the 100 who will pay ..... and thus overall the quality suffers ..... and with that less then get sold.

Whee! That'd be awesome! I'd love to have a DPC book. All of the photos are so wonderful. I think it would do well, at least around holiday times and such. You always see coffee table books around, but with it based of a popular website like this, it'd probably do even better.

I'd even be willing to help design it...I have a wonderful Yearbook program and have been on my HS staff for 4 years (Editor for 2). *coughs* Not that anyone really cares...I'm sure there are a bunch of better designers out there than me. I more of a consistency specialist anyway, but I'd help proff-read and keep the design constant...

*coughs again* I'm way ahead of the game, but eh. ^^;;;

Natator, that's a fair point. However, the problem might be limited by the fact that DPCPrints is well monitored for quality and all book entries would follow the same scrutiny procedures as a Prints submission.

I think the fee could perhaps be payable only after shots have been voted or shortlisted, as there may be more shots submitted for entry than can be featured anyway. This may help to generate some revenue for production and show commitment by those who may benefit from inclusion.

Depending on format (as in most directories featuring works of art) there could be a strata of entry pages, where 'free' entries are included, but less prominently, and those who pay are given a priority page. Seems fair to me and it wouldn't need to be a huge fee after all.

Are you sure? :P

There may be a whole load of people offering to design it too - lots of creatives on this site!

Your not the person that sent me that nice letter from Picture.com are you? ;)

The thing I"m suprised that no one has brought up yet is the fact that many of the photographers probably wouldn't want to give their copyright, or even a one use copyright, for this project.

Why not? Doesn't that defeat the object of trying to get one's work publicised?

Here are two links to "low-cost" postcard (and maybe calendar) printers:

Modern Postcard
Postcard Press

sweet links gen. thanks.

how about a book of only the competition winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd place in each challenge).

or

how about the site council picks their favorite photo from each member (not registered user) and offers that up (incentive to join too...) I'm sure there is a cheap pay per item source such as cafepress.com that could offer printing, and wouldn't be a financial risk to the brass here...

just some thoughts...

Everyone thinks this is a good idea. Wait till someone does it. You guys will be calling them in the middle of the night threatning them and telling them they stole your idea.

oooh a dpc book.....I wan't one.....I think I could enjoy having a table top book around the house with such wonderfull photo's in it. I would also feel quite privilaged to be able to show it off to all of my freinds. To have my work in the same book with Jacko, BradP, and the countless other spectacular photographers on this site would give me quite the feeling of pride.

I think the way I would organize it would to be with the 1st place shot on it's own page, under a header with the title of the challenge, 2nd and 3rd facing it. Possibly a paragraph by the photographer regarding thoughts and imressions realeted to their photo. This would limit the size of the book to 208 pages, not counting special challenges, such as the masters, and speed challenges, so say 250-275 pages total, which would be more manageable. This would also give a bit more incentive to put forth the extra effort to try for a ribbon.

To include every challenge entry, while admirable, would end up with a multi volume set, encompassing a breathtaking number of pages, or having the majority of the photos in thumbnail size.

That being said, I would probably but one, if the price was kept reasonable.

Just my 2p worth.
