| Someone was kind enough to mention GIMP as an alternative software program to the Microsoft XP program that come with my computer. What are your thoughts and experiences with GIMP? |

| I used the Gimp a few times in Linux and in General is good but it takes a lot of time to apply a filter so I returned to PhotoShop. |

Gimp is ok on the windows platform, it is a little slow but it is also free ;) as I mentioned in your other thread corinne Paint.net is another alternative.

| I use GIMP. It's the only thing I've ever known and I like it. If I had the choice I would opt for photoshop though. |

I taught GIMP at the High School level last year. It's a decent program. My only complaints are you can't convert to CMYK for publishing, it's a little slow on Windows and even slower on a Mac, controls can be a little confusing sometimes. Other than that it's great for anyone on a budget.

Its 'FREE', paint.net is another good option.
I use both, for relatively less editing I use paint.net - gets work done faster, for more extensive ones I use GIMP.
Comes with a price of being slow.

I've been using GIMP, too! I have GIMP on my primary computer and Photoshop on my other computer, but I find I prefer GIMP. It might just be me and my mad n00bishness, but the controls in GIMP just feel more intuitive to me. I'd used photoshop for years before that, so it's not like I didn't give PS a fair shot.
Edit: Of course, if you look at my profile, I'm not a good representative for GIMP.

I've used GIMP ever since I started editing photos. I've never had a problem with it being slow (except for the time I scanned an 8x10 photo in at 600 dpi), but then I'm also running it on the PCLinux OS platform - NOT Windows.
The only filter I've ever experienced as being slightly slow is Selective Gaussian Blur, and it is incrementally slow - that is, the stronger of an effect you apply, the slower it is.
To me, the GIMP is very easy to use. The interface makes much more sense to me that the PhotoShop interface, and you can find free helps and plug-ins for the GIMP (see the links below). While the GIMP may not have ALL of the doodads that PhotoShop has, the fact that it is a free program kind of makes up for that. :)

I find it does everything I need... But then I'm a linux user so PS is not a real option.
It is more diffcult to learn than PS, as the interface is a little quirky, and the comments about speed on windows are correct as well, as the way it is written means it needs an extra 'layer' of software to work under windows. Not much of an issue on a current tech. PC, but if your PC isn't state of the art you might find running some of the complex filters, or cubic scalling/rotating a little slow.
My recommendation to people is to give it a go, as it's free.. If you can't get the results you want after a few hours fiddling around, try something else! :-).
My only major gripe with the GIMP in it's current form is no native 16bit support, but that's comming soon apparently. Also the raw plugin is a little clunky, but has improved by huge margins in the last year with each release/update.
FYI, I use it for simple retouching, and prepping images for print, I don't do 'digital art' at all, PS is a far better tool if you want to do 'art' IMHO. |
