I mailed the SC about this one and they said it was a misprint. The other page with the teams listed says it right.

Its done all over the place without having a negative effect on competition or diluting the achievement ... i.e., senior leagues/junior varsity, major leagues/minor leagues etc. Winning a B or C league is an accomplishment, just as winning the A league will be -- no reason to prevent the "lower" leagues from crowning a champion imho.

This esteems my whole point. Even in your counter-argument you validated the concept of inherent "major" and "minor" leagues. I don't look at it like a talent-based separation at all. I see it as a value-based, motive-based, team-based approach. To even further the argument, when is the last time a JV team got recognized beyond the families and close community who follows it? In fact, the purpose of JV is to improve talent to the point of playing on Varsity and having their efforts go towards a title. But again, I wouldn't view B and C Division as such at all. Instead it is a weeding-out ground, to make it up to Division A. The competition, team and matchups are just as real and importnant, just not immediately rewarded with a "champion" designation in itself. Actually, to be competing with Division A would be an accomplishment in itself.

i disagree with this, also. it's like dividing dpc into major leagues and minor leagues, and then allowing only the major league teams to play for the world series. i say let it roll the way it is...

Read the above comments. I would recommend you read all the points I was trying to make. These are suggestions to improve and tighten up the DPL. I am not suggesting change at all. In fact, there is no "way" the way it is....that was what I was responding to in the first place. DPL is not DPC. I did not suggest Major and Minor League system at all. It is more of a Euro Football concept for those who actually know about it. Honestly, would anyone feel "good" about winning the backup, backup DPL Division? Really? This encourages all to strive for the ultimate title, not a subordinate one.

I would. And having won the "C" or "B" league championship, I would also relish the chance to compete in a higher league. There is nothing wrong, imho, with striving for a "subordinate" title along the road to improvement. I think its a mistake to assume that only the "A" league is worthy of a championship, or for folks currently in the A league, like us, to dictate how a B- or C-leaguer should feel.

You obviously disagree, and I respect your opinion. Just pointing out that there are differing views out there.

Edit to add: Re-reading what I wrote, i don't even like the implicit assumption that the B or C leagues involve lesser photographers, because there is a ton of talent on those teams as well. While a high DPC average is a sign of a good photographer, the opposite is not necessarily true, because DPC voting tends to reward certain styles and overlook others. So, yes, I would feel great about winning a B or C league championship.

while i think that there are some very good points being made here about the tournament seedings, i don't think this is the best place to do it.

like it or not, the season is set up already. if you have suggestions on seedings for future DPL seasons, let's start a new thread about it. i'd like to see this thread focus on the DPL's current structure, and be an informative reference for interested parties.

thanks!

I was responding directly to the first post, other SC posts and a personal original inquiry of the current setup. So if you are directing me to start a new thread, I feel the above quote is an obvious directive to allow us to discuss the current and amending future of the DPL in the same thread that directive was posted in.

What am I missing? Either way, my suggestions have been made...taken or not, its all good.

to clarify: we can still absolutely make adjustments and improvements to the tools available to DPL players. but there's just not much we can do right now about the format of the season.

i'm not trying to stifle conversation. i would just like this thread to focus on practical things that we can do to improve this season.

I see. In that case, I guess other than the seeding issue, I think the DPL looks great and good work all. And when we start discussing the future, I'll chime in then.

I see that our team's Private Discussion Thread is now
on the top row of the front page Forum activity.

It is easy to find, and it is a very, very nice touch.

Thank you langdon for this and all the other
nice toys you have given us to play with.

Oh, heck, Elvis, it was easier to take a picture of the screen:

Of course you can't read it very well, but you can see the two subject lines.

True, you'll have to log out and back in if you don't have your thread on the home page yet.

Also, I added all of the seeding information for those curious (check leftbox on league pages). I thought this would help in discussion of the fairness of our seeding method.

Well I think they put all the teams that choke in one division (i.e. yours) and the winners, the last two champions anyway in another (i.e. mine). It's probably better this way as you choke artists can build on moral victories since one is bound to get a little further in the playoffs in this format.

Langdon (and whoever else helped design the DPL): THANK YOU.

We on Critical Mass are already having fun discussing strategies and exchanging tips.

If I could have one more thing, I'd like to have the link to our team thread on my profile page also, not just the home page; I tend to check that more when looking to continue conversations.

If you can still put it on "Watched" status, it should be on that list on your profile page.

Hmm? I don't see a list of watched threads on my profile page. I see my top scorers, chosen portfolio images, all entries, all portfolio, then the most recent 10 threads I've posted to.

The only time I've seen a list of watched threads has been when I've clicked on the "watched threads" button on the home page.

What am I missing?

Excellent position for the Private Team Threads, Langdon! Thanks. :D
