I have to write an essay about anything photographic. The only problem is I'm having a hard time thinking about a topic to write about. The teacher wasn't very specific in what we have to write about so I guess I can do anything. It can be photography or photoshop. Does anyone have any ideas for a topic?

ohh what a great assignment! your very lucky to get to do this assignment.
here are some topic starters, fell free to take them in run, call them stupid, or anything in betwen.

1. The power of play, and it's importance to the creative process
2. What makes a good image good
3. What is the purpose of photography
4. Why are there so many people who love photography
5. follow the creative process, from previsualization to final print

ohh I could go on all day, hopes this helps.

How about doing something on the uses of photography. You could take one day to count the number of times and note the location of photos you encounter (not including TV). Then write up the ways in which photography pervades our everyday life.

BTW, what's the class and how long is the paper?

the class is studio lighting and the paper has to be 2-3 pages long

Try the history of photography

Maybe limiting it to one subject like from the natural light of the camera obscura to the power of strobes... (2-3 pages isn't much room for the entire history of photography).

I think an interesting one would be "controversial topics in photography." In my photo class, we were always arguing about when a photographer should stop taking photos and rather help. That would be a fun one!

Photographic ethics would be a good one.

If you want controversy try: "When is it Pornography?"

while it seems like a "free study" from her description, it is a studio lighting class so I would think it should at least pertain to that subject matter.

How about creative multi-source lighting with gels and reflectors?
