This comic reminds me of some of my conversations.

I don't know how many times friends & acquaintances have asked me why I have to have such an expensive camera or why I have to stop and set up the tripod when they can get perfectly good pictures with their cell phone -- *and it fits in their pocket*.

In the end, I guess it just comes down to... "Because I like to fool with shutter speeds and aperatures and ISO's. I like to challenge myself to get a slightly different perspective or to be there at 5:30am to get that early low-angle light. I enjoy reliving the memories that come to mind when I look at a photo on my wall and remember the trip and the challenges I dealt with to get the shot." Sometimes they understand, sometimes they feign to understand. And sometimes they don't bother at all.
