Current poll indicates..

640 votes so far.

527 agree to a change of at least 720 pixels. 82.3%

113 do not want to see a change. 17.7%

Looking good for the pro 720px camp!

Why not add some simple dhtml code like the dpreview forums?
640x480 (or whatever) initially then w/ a button click expand to full size?

because I want to make sure people see my image at the resolution I submitted. As I said yesterday, I pulled an image from the Cultural Events challenge because it just didnt work at 640, it popped at 720. Now I dont want to incur the wrath of the 640 brigade when voting just because my image doesnt work at their desired resolution of 640.

I'm not saying to expand it above what you submitted.
If you submitted less than 720 then clicking it would just show it at 640 or whatever you uploaded.

Mark's point is that his 720px dependent submission would not work in the 640px mode.

The problem is the extra step to see it properly. Most voters don't spend more than about 5 or 6 seconds on an image. They will most likely vote on whatever shows up initially.

Now, that's not to say this wouldn't work for portfolio images.

Because code resized images tend to be jagged edged and cruddy looking!

If you mean by "code resized" you just mean the image tag size attributes, yes.
But how hard is it for the upload process to just save another size just like it does for thumbnails and have some client code read your screen resolution/browser size and show the biggest image that would fit?

because the last thing I do after resizing is apply sharpening, and I would never leave it to a script or automated process to make my image look good after resizing. What works for a 640 image in the sharpening dept. may look shite when applied at 720 and vice versa.

Good point.

05/09/2007 10:52:36 PM · #165
I really don't want to have to scroll while voting to see the entire photo... some categories have so many entrants... it would make me not want to vote.... either that or I can just judge the photo by the top half :P

/complaint

It's looking like the people want a change.

826 people so far want there to be larger images on DPC

176 want nothing to change

Those are numbers you can't ignore

No they are WAY too big...you'd have to close your eyes or something.

Closing your eyes and hitting the 1-10 scale might be an interesting way to vote.

There is no doubt that an increase in file size would be nice, and please bump it up quite a bit - especially if the dimensions are increased as well! With a too low limit, DPC actually creates a bias for certain types of images similarly to how a non-square px-limit would. Have you also noticed that BW photos look sharped than colour photos on DPC? Hardly a coincidence...

Former Size Poll
Previous Poll 3 to 4 times as many people said no but the majority wasnt enough.
Funny thing is NOW people want more 720 less for 800 but back then it was alot different.

720x720 Poll

524 versus 270

I'm one of the 176. I will vote on what I see in the first 2 seconds. I won't scroll and I won't press F11., if thats just the top or just the bottom then go ahead and change ;-/

Just make sure your images work in two halves !!

But why?

Also, if it goes upto 720, something which is incredibly likely to happen now, will you only submit shots that are 640 max size?

how do you vote on the few challenges we have that allow 720?
05/10/2007 05:44:07 PM · #174
If the SC/Langdon don't make the change after this debate then it probably wont happen for the next 12 - 18 months or so.. DPC really need to realise a lot more people want this change than ever.. Why cater for the minority? Come on guys, the public have spoken.. any chance of an official statement indicating your intentions?

Cheers,

mark

Cos I'm lazy like 90% of the other voters!
No, I will submit to 720.
I tend to lose interest in voting when the 720s are used, I start but then rarely finish
