I'm looking into earning my CCP (Certified Professional Photographer). Its not an easy acheivement, but I'm willing to have a go at it. Requirements include a portfolio of 20 images plus a very very long written test. Here are ten "sample questions". (Gotta admit, I was totally stumpped by several of them, I think I have months of studying ahead of me.)

1. Which of the following will be produced when a large white umbrella is used closed to a subject?

A. Minimal effects of flare
B. Flat, low contrast results
C. Crisp, sharp, richly saturated results
D. Enhanced texture, color and shadows

2. A particular filter used with black and white film calls for an exposure factor of 8X. Applying this filter to the initial exposure reading of 1/2 second at f/32 will require a new exposure of:

A. 1/8 second at f/22
B. 1/8 second at f/16
C. 1/4 second at f/22
D. 1/4 second at f/16

3. Which of the following is created when equal amounts of yellow, magenta and cyan filtration are combined over a single light source?

A. Blue
B. White
C. Equal amounts of red, green and blue are reflected
D. Equal amounts of red, green and blue are absorbed

4. In focusing on the same subject at the same distance, what will happen to the image size if a 300mm telephoto lens is used on a 35mm camera compared to a 300 mm lens used on a medium-format camera?

A. There will be a larger image size with the 35mm
B. There will be a smaller image size with the 35mm
C. There will be no difference in image size

5. JPEG compression is the key to:

A. Enhancing images
B. Expanding memory
C. Adding more pixels to the file
D. Keeping large images manageable

6. When going clockwise around the color wheel with red on the top, the progression of color is:

A. Cyan, magenta, yellow, green, blue
B. Green, blue, yellow, magenta, cyan
C. Magenta, blue, cyan, green, yellow
D. Yellow, green, cyan, blue, magenta

7. A photographer is preparing for a portrait session and trying to decide which ISO to use in order to produce optimal sharpness, detail and resolution. Which of the following ISO settings should be used?

A. 100
B. 400
C. 800
D. 1000

8. In a portrait illuminated with 3:1 lighting ratio, comparisons of the highlight side of the face with the shadow side would produce a difference of how many stops?

A. 0.5
B. 1.5
C. 2.5
D. 3.5

9. A photographer has been asked to photograph some diamond jewelry for a department store. Which of the following styles of lighting would be best to use?

A. Back-lit
B. Front-lit
C. Overhead
D. Non-directional

10. For best results, where should the hair light be positioned?

A. Over the subject's hair
B. Below the subject's chin
C. To one side of the subject
D. At the center of the subject's nose

Forgive typos please. I have the answers to these, so its not like I'm asking for cheats - these were just a few sample questions. I thought it would be fun to see who knows all of the answers........

Some of those are tricky!
What the hell is a color wheel and why would I need to know the sequence!?!?!?

A color wheel comes in handy when you want to do one of several things.

Skin tones.

Jells on lights.

Filters on cameras.

Editing.

Natural light.

But, I got a 'C', which compared to my overall average on my profile is 5.2.

HA, I am totally average.

Just great.

It seems like some of those questions might require additional information to give a good intelligent answer.

1: B
2: B
3: B
4: B
5: D (best one, but might be a language problem)
6: C
7: A
8: B
9: C (what has this to do with portraits?)
10: A

eek!

Hann, 50% :)

The test isn't just on portraiture -- its on all things related to professional photography. (you got #5 right)

The suggested reading for this exam is about 20 books. Somewhere in them will be a definite answer to every question. ;?

pff, I never knew the technical stuff, but I do know how to work on intuition ;)

oh cin, what was your percentage of this test when you did it the first time?

;)
05/08/2007 10:16:10 AM · #13
Well, here's my (very quick) go:
1= D
2= None of the Above*
3= A
4= C
5= D
6= Ummm, pass.
7= A
8= B
9= D
10=C

* An 8x exposure difference is three stops. Starting with 1/2 second at f/32, you'd need 1/2 second at f/11, or 1 second at f/16... none of the answers seem to fit. Unless it is a trick question and 8x isn't really 8x for B+W film :-P

Ya know, Canon and Nikon are going to have the next generation camera not only have the latest and greatest whistles and bells attached, but, the camera them selves will know the answers to this test, and actually ask the photographer if they know what the hell they are doing?

You bet! I'll post them here later, after more people have had a chance to give them a try.
