I would like to suggest the monthly free study alternate between Basic Editing and Advanced Editing. Having a month with Basic Editing would open up an open challenge but have it about the photogrpahy and less about the processing - just a thought.

Just to be fair, why not rotate through all the editing...

Go from Min, to Bas, to Adva, to Expert. That is the only truely way to be fair to everyone.

Limiting it to only two of the four is completely unfair for those who like the other two. and considering it is called a 'FREE STUDY' I think it would work out great.

Why not minimal editing? If ya really want to make it about the photography. I agree with littlegett, give all four rules sets a chance.

Think all you want, those apples are apples...

But doesn't change the fact about if the site wants to be fair to everyone or not.

To be fair, minimal editing would leave a lot of us out of the free study. Us Raw shooters aren't fond of switching to JPEG. But, I wouldn't complain, I can find other things to enter or shoot specifically for free study with RAW+JPEG.

Yeah, I agree, I hate switching over to jpg, but, I shoot for the specific challenge and not grab whatever is laying around... maybe thats why my average is under 5? L()L

I would suggest NOT basic. Membership has its privileges, after all.

Minimal isn't really all about photography either. We could have another go 'round of beating the dead horse or we could just cycle through the different editing rules available.

How about this switch?

Have one of the open challenges as a free study once a month with either basic or minimal (still a 1 week to shoot challenge)

Have the member free study monthly challenges as either advanced or expert

There has to be some incentive to pay for a membership somewhere. ;o)

Sounds reasonable, when I wrote the post I wasn't really thinking about it that broadly, and I prefer Basic and Advanced more than the other two. Not good enough of a photographer for Minimal and not good enough with PS for Expert, :-)

Your right membership does have its incentives one of them is a monthly free study. An open challenge free study or using any of the other "perks" in open challenges cheapens them IMHO. YMMV

Ok Thats It, All Cards on the Table...

There should be FOUR Free Studies each month, you can only enter ONE!,
Each of the four is based off a Different Editing Rules-set.

So now, this makes everyone happy every month, PLUS it should help cut down the size of the challenges so they don't seem so daunting.

Lastly, the other challenges remain the same however it is they are ran. Just make these changes to the Monthly Free Study and Everyone is Happy.

If we really wanted to make it about the photography make it a film only challenge and you have to develop it yourself.

sounds good, but then lets make it tough by only allowing 1 ribbon for each one :P

Don't understand this one... There is only 'ONE' ribbon... the Blue One... nothing else matters... 6-;
