Tamron have just released a new telephoto -an SP 70-200 f2.8 based on the well liked SP 28-75 f2.8.
Anyone seen it - tried it - seen any reviews on it ?
I was wondering if they are trying to compete with the Canon 70-200L f4.

I haven't seen any reviews yet. The 28-75 has great optics, but frankly the build quality isn't anything special. Hopefully they kept the dampened zoom ring and manual focus that could be easily turned when it's on AF like the older 70-210 had.

I have asked Tamron about it and they said wait for April, I think, and April has come and gone. Other than that they didn't give me any other information on the lens.

It's about the size of the Canon 70-200f2.8L non IS but lighter and with a closer min. focus distance for a larger magnification.

The AF is like the Tokina's where you pull the focus ring back to go from AF to MF. Unlike Canon there is no USM, so I suspect the AF to be noisier and perhaps slower as well.

Tamron tends to price their lenses well so I suspect it will be considerably cheaper than the Canon 70-200mm f2.8L non IS (just my speculation).

As compared to the Canon 70-400 f4L, I think the Tamron should be bigger and heavier, but you do have f2.8.

Yea, saw that a while ago as well, just a press release.
I don't have a 70-200 anymore and don't care for them, but it'll be interesting to see how it does against the Canon version.
