Count me in. I Hope that I will be able to finish, varsity is really brutal this year.

I like the channel mixer for B&W conversion, simple desaturation just looks too flat.

I wanna play! I really need work on B/W and need all the help and suggestions I can get.

This is what my layers pallette looks like in Cs2.

Hope it starts to get clearer :)

YES ... thats heaps clearer .... aint it hard trying to explain in words the intricacies of photoshop !!!!! .. you do pretty much wot i do .. coz wot i didnt say before was that i also duplicate layers to do noise ninja and sharpening etc ... and of course the dodging and burning etc ... and other stuff which i'd find very hard to explain IN WORDS!!
edit .. and thank you so much for spending the time doing that print screen and then process/crop etc in photoshop, and resize and save for web, then download into dpc .. which i'd assume you had to do to get that workflow diagram in here .. but if there was some other easier way .. I'D LIKE TO KNOW !!..:)

If I'm allowed to play I might have a bash at this challenge, I love B&W and could certainly do with the practice

Here is how I set up most of my workflow in Cs2 for B&W(from top layer down). However I start with bottom, so it my be easier to read from the bottom up. I know confusing, but here it is.

7)Curves or levels adjustment(for final contrast weaks) sometimes more than one
6)Black and White Gradient Map adjustment layer
5)Selective Color adjustment layer-First make this but don't use it, after you make the gradient map, come back to it.(Then I play with each color mostly with the black slider to lighten or darker certain colors in the photo, although the other sliders can make subtle changes too)
4)Copy of Image Layer(with shadow/highlights adjustment) set to 50%. On this layer I do all my dodging and burning. I start at 50% then slide it around if I have done too much to change how present the dodge and burn is.

3)Copy of image Layer and run shadows/highlight adjustment. I can then fade the overall effect using the opacity slider.
2)Image Layer copy-just in case I get all screwed up I still have the original to go back to.
1)Image Layer

Thats the general template anyway.

I thought I read that e301, when converting from raw he desaturates the image in a raw converter and than does all of his adjustments with those sliders. I tried that with my hate entry, all I did after I converted it was add a curve.
For reference
The tutorial on this site is really good too :)
Hope this helps some. I have a feeling its just confusing, LoL.

Thanks Joe. I just did a partial desat using this technique, including using the channel mixer, and I love the effect. Now I need to track down where my black and white gradient map is on my editing package. Love this site and love the tips.

I normally let the side challenges slip by, but the chance to practice and learn more of the B&W technique intrigues me. So I would like to join in on the group.

Can you kindly add me to the growing list of participants?

If I'm doing this because I'm not good at post processing and want the comments to learn, will I be knocked if I don't comment much? I find it hard to comment on post processing if I don't understand how to do it ;)
04/27/2007 09:08:38 AM · #137
I would comment on what you like and what you don't like and don't worry about the technicals if you are not comfortable discussing...

OK I asked for that one.

New thread title maybe "THE B&W 30 Day'er has begun"

Certainly some good names up there, I just got my D100 back today all fixed and cleaned so I think I might ONLY use that camera for these challenges so I can re-unite myself with its excellence.

Good luck all, don't forget to comment and if you have any advice to offer please do so even if you do not feel you know anything you still have an opinion as a viewer and as a photographer so please leave a comment on as many as you can that way we can all learn and study about peoples ideas and styles..

ME ME ME I WANNA PLAY!!! I've been so out of the game because of school this semester. I love shooting b/w, and I have some time before my summer class starts and I miss my camera madly!

I'm sorry the rules state that beautiful women that pose with apple and magazines must be excluded from participating. :P

Oooooo.... I've been wanting to learn more about B&W! Can I play? I have never done a 30 day challenge, but it looks very...... well, challenging. I probably will not be able to submit everyday but hopefully more days than not.

I am just seeing this now, hope I can get in on this as well. I can't promise a shot everyday who knows.

You could always start two weeks later than the rest of us.

I may try the same as what was done in minimal editing. Rather than getting a new picture every day, I will take one every other day. The first shot will be as is, the second with my editing steps. That way I only need 15 shots, and it will be easier on most of the viewers. Does that seem viable? In that way, we can look at the original shot, see if it was seen with black and white eyes, and the differences in conversion. I understand about trying to see in black and white. It will let me work with training the eye for contrast, shadow and highlights and then I can get a really good feel for what I am doing that may or may not work for black and white.

Ok, I need a lot of work, so this should really help me. Count me in, if it's not too late!
