Roz, take your pics in color and then convert. Try that. AND since I just said that, could you all tell me what you do to get great contrasty B/W images? Mine usually seem flat.

this is wot i learnt in the thread thread where steve give critique's and i know its not about b&w, but i think the general principles could apply and HELP ... and if not, then it will help with our colour photographs ...

Suggestions:
In images captured in RAW do as much color processing and saturation in the RAW converter as possible and open the image in 16-bit mode in a high density color space like "Prophoto RGB". All this will preserve more color variations in color tones and reduce banding. In fact, that is one of the main reasons for taking in RAW in the first place, to preserve all that image detail possible. Color processing in your image editor will degrade your color tones and if you overdo it banding shows up. Don't change image to 8-bit and sRGB until just before you save for the web and your tones will be best preserved in your output file.

wow michelle ... you are toooo nice ... i think i'm my harshest critic tho .. and of course i compare myself to all those amazing photographers we have in dpc ... like i reckon we've got the best in the whole world right here!! .. so of course i'd reckon i was pretty ordinary ... :)

i agree with marac ... if there are too many ppl in one of these challenges it makes it difficult to really comment and spend the time with each other's work ..

You'll find that after the first week, people will drop off. They will realize that sometimes it's hard to keep up. I've done that lol. And that is why I am stating NOW that I am not doing pictures every day. I'm giving myself some time to make comments.

So I say let whomever wants to play, just play. Cuz we are not about RESTRICTING peeps are we???? :D

i dont think there's a problem if you cant actually do every day .. just do what you can .. these challenges are pretty relaxed in that way ... its more a learning thing than a competition ..

we might have to SUSPEND a few if they dont put a photograph in every single day tho!!

sorry again my missunderstanding... i meant we should make a list now of who is playing because it is getting many folk.. we dont wanna leave anyone out do we... sorry i was not clear about my meaning.

Im sure some will drop off after a few days and I dont think everyone will be submitting everyday.. I will try, I shoot everyday so all i have to do is drop one in.. just might not be any good.

I just a call from Nikon too, they fixed my old D100 WOOHOO!!! I love that old camera.

hi lisa .... iamwoman and wow .. it may'v been a good thing that your camera died .. coz it appears you've got a MUCH BETTER one now !! .. and wot better place to get to really know it .. i've found these side challenges are just great for that ... will really look forward to see your photographs .... x .. :)

I think the more people the merrier.
people will and do drop out.
the more people doing it means there's more chance of getting constructive comments.

as for doing it every single day; it certainly isn't a requirement.
no penalties for not doing it.
the same as there is no reward for doing.
it's all about self satisfaction!!!
i still haven't finished the 30 day "where i live challenge" :-)
and it took me 5 weeks to do the 4 week pet portrait challenge :-)

michelle, i'd like to participate the b&w challenge but i'm not sure if i can everyday.

I'm interested, but can someone explain to me how these challenges work? Do we just post in a thread? Do I have to join first (let's face it, I'm just looking for an excuse...)?

Just curious about the mechanics.
04/26/2007 10:40:05 AM · #47
I want to participate too, if you are making a list please add me, same as some other people I may not be able to take a photo every single day, I'll try my best.
04/26/2007 11:00:03 AM · #48
You can add me in, I haven't done a side challenge as of yet, and I'm very interested in B&W photography.
04/26/2007 11:22:56 AM · #49
I love B&W and side challenges so count me in. I'm currently doing the 30-day portrait challenge and it's somewhat hard ot keep up. I suggest taking a whole bunch of pictures and loading them up one a day...that seems to work very well for me.
04/26/2007 11:39:05 AM · #50
i would like to join in this as well.
reckon i could contribute 2 or 3 images a week.

this is one area i would really want to improve on, so all comments would be very welcome.
