Hi, I just took this picture in our first snow. Could someone tell me if the exposure is ok. Also how can I take better pictures in the snow? Thanks.

Just looks a tad overexposed to me.

I think it looks fine :)

Here is my "Winter Storm Watch" ... I am adding to this every couple of hours to make comparisons.... we expect about a foot or more.

And this is my favorite snow photo from last winter.... I think your exposure is about the same as mine on this one.. I think they are fine.

Diva - that looks good to me. The snow looks a natural white.

I like the composition. It looks a little under exposed actually. Snow is white, not grey. You camera will naturally tend to underexpose snow. In order to get bright snow, you'll need to over expose 1 sometimes even 2 stops.

you want to be careful to not overexpose too much though. You'll lose the texture if you're not careful.

I agree with Jacko, I think it's a bit under. Not much in this case, but typically snow provides so much white that the camera will underexpose snow scenes by about 1 stop if it's overcast, and 2 or more stops if it is sunny

Ah, there's the rub! Snow is almost never white. It takes on colors around it. At sunset, it may be more red or orange or yellow. In the shade, it becomes blue or pink. It really depends, but white is a rarity unless you're out in an open field on a sunny day.

As for exposure, snow is difficult because you don't want to blow out the whites. The subtle shades of drifts and hills are lovely, and the various textures of snow are interesting, too. If you overexpose, you'll lose that texture. If you underexpose, you'll emphasize the texture too much and your shot will appear grainy. I almost always use my manual mode when shooting snow to get it just right. Even then, your camera cannot see the same things that you do. Good luck! Even professional photographers have trouble with snow!

Oh Man!! Now I'm jealous.

We didn't get doodley-squat for snow here in Michigan. I wanted to bust out the snow machines and the sleds. Guess I'll just have to wait.

How much did you get in Chelmsford? I think we have 2+ feet here.
I just added the 9 AM photos to that gallery. I think it might take all day just to dig out the driveway. I am glad the cars are in the garage!
Still snowing here too.

probably over a foot or something like that on average, but it's really uneven because it's been blowing all over the place... all i can say that the miniature schnauzer refused to go out even behind the beagle and the shepherd... until the path was cleared by the shovel................ i suppose i should go out and take some pictures of the three of them in the snow... or not...

Sonny

Did you try and get a shot of the lake from right alongside the red canoe? Seems like it could hav made a good shot with the white snow?
