Thank you, Rebecca! I was trying to find this but not having a ton of luck. A lot of interesting ideas there. Guess I will need to put on my thinking cap!

So I'm guessing an apple pie with a nice round hole in the middle of it won't do too well.

Well, wasn't sure what they were looking for here. I thought maybe they were looking for a photo of something totally irrational, and used PI as the beginning point. After looking at the first challenge, I can see that irrational is not really what is wanted, but something depicting the symbol of PI. Well, should be interesting and somewhat difficult.

Well, understand that the voting public has changed drastically since then, so who knows what they want. LOL

what a bummer. when I seen this challenge announcement I thought about making a stencil for one of my strobes and have a pi symbol reflected in the eye. Then I seen this thread and had a look at the past challenge. I am going back to my drawing board.

I thought you may like to get inspired by a great Noble Prize winner:

Pi
by Wislawa Szymborska

The admirable number pi:
three point one four one.
All the following digits are also just a start,
five nine two because it never ends.
It can't be grasped, six five three five , at a glance,
eight nine, by calculation,
seven nine, through imagination,
or even three two three eight in jest, or by comparison
four six to anything
two six four three in the world.
The longest snake on earth ends at thirty-odd feet.
Same goes for fairy tale snakes, though they make it a little longer.
The caravan of digits that is pi
does not stop at the edge of the page,
but runs off the table and into the air,
over the wall, a leaf, a bird's nest, the clouds, straight into the sky,
through all the bloatedness and bottomlessness.
Oh how short, all but mouse-like is the comet's tail!
How frail is a ray of starlight, bending in any old space!
Meanwhile two three fifteen three hundred nineteen
my phone number your shirt size
the year nineteen hundred and seventy-three sixth floor
number of inhabitants sixty-five cents
hip measurement two fingers a charade and a code,
in which we find how blithe the trostle sings!
and please remain calm,
and heaven and earth shall pass away,
but not pi, that won't happen,
it still has an okay five,
and quite a fine eight,
and all but final seven,
prodding and prodding a plodding eternity
to last.

Did anyone notice that's not the correct Greek symbol for Pi? I believe that is sigma.

I have made suggestions that they link the previous challenges when there are more than one. I guess "they" don't agree because it hasn't been done. There are so many pages and no search function (that I can find) that it makes it frustrating.

Just check the box that says 'Show all Challenges' and sort them alphabetically. They are now all on one page and you can scroll to the P's. Easy as 'Pi'.

Or don't sort and use CTRL+F.

So... if I score a 3.14 do I win?

I think so! Did anyone accomplish that in the last one?
04/25/2007 07:12:53 PM · #16
Looks like someone tried with a 3.4 getting last place. I think I can do better than that.

Going back to my original idea, hmmm, I like the thought of something irrational. Hey, why not. i am on a role. Scores aren't even climbing beyond 5 lately, so I might as well keep it up. PI as a symbol is pretty boring. Irrational. Now that is fun.

Last winner was "'Pi' in the eye" by Casual Guy.

...I just wanted to say that because I like the way it rolls off the tongue.

Not sure which symbol you were refering to, but all of the challenge entries I saw used the proper pi symbol...

The one in the challenge description. I noticed it also.

Oh, right you are.

That's a lower case eth, from the roman alphabet. It was (according to Wikipedia) used in middle english but was replaced by 'th' and dropped from the current roman alphabet (which is what we write in).

For what it's worth. ;)

edit: eth is still used in the modern icelandic alphabet, it seems.

Sigma is Σ. :) Well, the symbol is not posting correctly even though it looks good here. It's the Angle lookin' E for lack of a better way to describe it.

Pi or Ð is the symbol for Pi used in Greece, at least when I was in school. The Greek philosopher Archimedes methodically calculated Pi but using the letter pi to represent that number was introduced later on.

Sigma Ó means 'sum' in mathematics.

AS far as how they sound. Pi sounds exactly like a english 'p'.
when saying youalphabet in Greek you call the letter 'p' (as in 'pee') and not 'pi' (like 'pie')

Sigma 'Ó' is an 's'

wow just saw that greek fonts didnt get posted, so ignore the Ð and Ó symbols
