When talking about lenses, how do you say this:
"70-300mm"
Would you say:
"Seventy to Three Hundred"
or
"Seventy Three Hundred"
I say the "to". A guy in my class doesn't. When we was talking about lenses he owned I had NO idea what he was talking about. I thought he was talking about a "7300 series" or model, or something. I wonder how many people say "to" and how many people smash the numbers together. |

It took me a while to catch on when first hearing others in person when I went to Kenya, but I caught on they were saying "Seventy Three Hundred" and not "7300".

I just smush the numbers together. Though with my lenses it's hard to get confused over what's being said.
one hundred four hundred
seventeen forty (edit - maybe this one as well)
twenty eight one thirty five (well, maybe with this one)

I just say the numbers without a "to".

My tamron 17-50 2.8 is said as "a tamron 17 to 50 two point eight" and so on... |

Just to balance the sides, I say "seventy to two hundred". I'd say it more enthusiastically if I had one. :) |

I have the same lens and I say it the same way. The instructions say to. |

I usually have my 28135 attached to the camera unless I switch to the 1530 or 100300. |

So it is more widely accepted to just say the min/max focal lengths than it is to add a "to" between them. I guess I am an oddball. I better remember this when I sit around and talk shop with all the high rollin' photographers.

I just realized I don't say "point" in the aperature. If asked aperature I would say "two eight" or "five six" or "four oh"...
Anyway...food for thought!

I leave my 28135 at 8 if there's enough light. If not I switch to 5 point 6. |

I never realized I didn't say "to" until you brought it up. I switch my 1755 for the 7200 when I need a longer shot.... Guess its just laziness because I'm thinking 17 to 55....

The only reason I thought of it was this guy in my class kept talking about his expensive (I heard) "7300" lens. I was thinking, "what the hell is this guy talking about?" It wasn't until he pulled his 70-300mm out of his bag that I realized he didn't say "to" like I did.
So I began to think I was the crazy one...and have proved this conclusion with this thread! |

For a bit when I read this I thought maybe you meant me! I'm pretty sure when we spoke at lunch on sunday that I didnt use the "to" when we discussed your lens. I know I dont when I discuss mine. Its pure laziness on my part.

well i say the 'to'.
and considering that the '-' in the lable on the lens siginifies a range. xx - xxx = xx to xxx. i would say it is improper not to say the 'to' ;}
i'd love to borrow a 7300 though...
but i alos only have primes - so it isn't really too much of an issue for me speaking of my lenses.

Didn't your mother teach you it's not polite to point? ;) |
