My son, who is going to school in Tempe, AZ and lives a few blocks from school in Phoenix, called this evening to tell us his car (well ours really - he has it to drive while he's at school) was stolen from his apartment's parking lot. I had never even considered the possibility that someone might steal a locked 8 year old Jeep Cherokee! It has Colorado license plates too - which would seem to make it stand out a bit in Arizona. He filed a police report immediately, and we've contacted the insurance company, but it is still a hassle and makes me angry and sad that someone would do that.

My car was stolen near ASU about 8 mos after arriving from CO for undergrad studies (back in 1990). We have among the highest vehicle theft rate in the country -- with insurance rates that reflect that stat -- and the town of Guadalupe, which is only 5 miles from campus, is a major hub for boosted cars going to Mexico (usually as drug runners).

Doesn't surprise me at all that it was a near 10-year old Cherokee either; easy to steal and useful for its utility (cargo space) in smuggling activities.

I had a Civic stolen the first night in my new apartment in Glendale AZ. 2 years old with 20 thousand miles on it! We owed almost nothing...that sucked too!

I am very sorry for your loss. Just keep an eye out for it when ever you drive places and look threw trees and wooded areas. If you know of any swampy area's you might want to go check those. I would also start asking around places, start posting up flyers. The faster you can get pictures out the more likely someone will remember seeing it. Don't be ashamed to do any of this as it projects the highest return rate of stolen goods.

GOOD LUCK TO YA MATE!

Yeah, I have heard that the Arizona swamps is where car thieves like to ditch the car after their joy ride. :-)

Sorry to hear that.... I deal with this just about every day in my job... the plates dont matter, because they will probably just take them off and put stolen plates on it anyway... most of the time we recover them.... but usually not in good shape :(

A woman had her 87 Accord stolen 3 times in one year about 2 years ago.

Unfortunately, Arizona is rated among the highest for vehicle thefts. The good news is they also have one of the worst recovery rates or maybe bad news on how you look at it. My first car was a 10 year old cherokee and was stolen a year later. The worst part is when they steal it and all they take is the radio. Then you have to pay a $500 deductible just to get your car back.

I had my car stolen back in 1994 when I was living in Los Angeles. It was a 1989 Honda Civic with 123,000 miles on it. Of course it happened while I was at work, so I had to find another way to get home. They basically stripped all the usable parts off it and dumped it. The officer, when he called me at 3AM to tell me that they'd recovered my car, well part of it anyway, told me that I was lucky since the thieves often set them on fire when they dump them.

In addition to all the stuff that was inside, they took; the hood, all 4 wheels, both doors, the dashboard, center console, steering wheel, all 4 seats, the stereo and the rear hatch. To drive it, they used a pair of vise grips on the steering column and sat on a milk crate.

Odds are they stole it for parts.

I think you're on to something there.

That is a hassle...sorry to hear about that.

My roommate in college had his car stolen while we were at class (the fact that we were at class is crazy enough, but the fact that we actually drove the 1/4 mile on campus to class was ridiculous). Well, his car was stolen and used as getaway car #1 in a bank robbery that night (or the next day). The thieves drove his car to the second getaway stolen car and just left his on the side of the road. The police returned the vehicle, in decent shape, 'cept for the blood stains in the back seat from one of the robbers who got shot. That was pretty gross.

His attitude was pretty good about the situation...he called the police and filed a report, and then we went out drinking - since there was nothing he could do about it, at that point. Ahhh, college.

It's usually either that or a joyride.
