I'm heading to America in May but I had thought I would just go to a processing shop and pay to have them burned to a CD as I won't have access to a computer all the time.

I've never actually used it, but I've heard good things about PhotoShelter (www.photoshelter.com)

i dunno about dumping RAW's... but photobucket has always been good to me.. Sign up for a few accts, use Flock, its broswer that uploads many photos at once to photobucket. I have literally thousands of images on photobucket.

The problem with using online storage to dump your cards to is that it is so slow. Even with a high speed connection upload speed will be somewhere in the 40 –50 Kbytes/sec. This means you are looking at something like 10 hours just to up load a 2 GB card.

Many local pharmacies/drug stores/grocery stores in the US could make you a photo CD off your CF card in about an hour. You just pop it in and out of their little machine and come back later for your CD. Sounds like this might not be a bad idea unless you have steady online access in your travels.

Hope you have a good trip!! :-)

You could get one of these if you have the money. Wolverine FlashPac external hardrvie/card reader. This one is 40 gigs, but I have one that is 80 gigs, that I found on sale at Fry's for about the same price. It is so great, I never run out of space, and saves from editing shots in camera. If not, I suggest the pharmacy/camera store route.

I love the Hyperdrive HD80 - just a laptop drive with some firmware in a case (no screen nothing). Every time you insert a card it copies the thing.

Otherwise grab a hosting service if you don't have one and just ftp them to your site. If you don't, I currently use SiteGround because they are pretty good as far as dirt cheap hosts and they allow a LOT of space; mine is 250Gb :-)

I transfer mine to my iPod.

I could be wrong but isn't there a way of turning your gmail into an ftp server using a firefox extension.

If you go to a local university it'll be more like 500kb or 1 hour. Usually there is a library, or computer lab on campus.

edit: you could also probably use the computers to burn CD-R's

I found the gmail thing and it looks pretty good, each account now has 2500mb's so thats good but it takes a fair bit of time per picture, it took 4min for a 4mb song

an epson p5000 (there's a few different types, p2000, p3000, etc) would be perfect ... big screen, lots of space, but kinda pricey at around $600-700.

for gmail and other web based storage, the amount of upload time would kill you. and you'd need to hold 6-7 accounts to make it worth while.

perhaps consider burning straight to dvd. cds are useless when you consider that 3 cds wouldn't cover a full 2gig memory card. you can do that in many internet cafes now, and a library or university campus should have them.

how long is your trip? stocking up on a few bigger memory cards (i have an 8gig and a 2gig) might give you enough memory to cover your trip anyway, if you save compressed raw and delete pictures that you know are below standard.

were going for 10 days, I might pick up another memory card if i can find a good deal, all the ones i found are only for the US, not canada. I dont wanna buy from ebay cuz they might just be relabled cheap memory cards. And i dont want to buy a large storage device cuz im already gunna be buying a new lens and thats gunna run me around $300-400 i think. only 17ish days till i go , hope i can find something.

Are you sure that internet cafe's allow you to burn dvds? If so that would be perfect, i have a crapload of blank 4gig dvd's that i could use.

while this won't help if you are camping in yosemetie (where the internet wouldn't help anyways, i guess), one of the easiest and most reliable ways is to burn a dvdr at the end of the day and mail it to yourself. i'm all for digital solutions, but in the absence of cheap online storage and lots of bandwidth, this is hard to beat.

Not sure what kind of cards your using but i just bought a shitload of 2GB SD cards from Circuit City for 29.99 a peice on sale their Polaroid/PNY brand. I benchmarked them against my standard sandisk cards and they do better with small transfer and exactly the same with large transfers.

$30 isn't that bad, i wish buy.com shipped to canada, (in another thread) someone said they have 4gig sandisk cards for $40ish with the discounts. I was all set to buy one but then i saw the "Will not ship to canada". Well thats pretty gay lol.
