The DP Challenge "Upside" submission
The challenge of being a photographic artist is to create an image that enlightens imagination, thought, or at bare minimum gets a reaction. It appears if there was a prize for that, I would of come close to first.
The name of the image is not "Upsidedown", unlike some peoples thinking.
Did you turn the image over? Ask yourself why!
But!, please!..next time..don't tell anyone.

It's to bad that some imaginations are trapped in a dark dirty place.

There's nothing better than an enlightened mind........

Here's a quote from the websters dictionary found under the word art.
The "making or doing of things that display form, beauty, and unusual perception'

Unusual perception is definitely what i'm thinking when I look at that photograph...

what? once again, I am confused...someone please tell me, in layman's terms, what he is speaking of.

Sometimes I like my imagination being trapped there........

I think this pic would have been a lot better if someone had shaved closer.

No, then it would have been boring.

I think you better go look up the word "Abstract"

05/17/2002 06:38:35 PM · #8
No ,I think this whole topic is boring.......Are we talking about the image or your perverted perceptions??
05/17/2002 07:21:23 PM · #9
We'll. I don't know what it is a photo of. It could be a eyebrow, an armpit, a pubic shot..

I don't know but that wasn't waht turned me off on the photo.

The skin tone and the contrast did not appeal to me and I felt the artist was trying to figure out what he wanted to photograph. I think I gave this one a 3.

Even though I could not tell the "upside down" part that did not figure into my voting too much.

As far as perverse thinking or whatever. I don't think too many here are turned off by the human body in any shape, at tleast not the photographers here. Some of your less enthusiastic comments may have come from casual web surfer voters and they usually don't hang out ion the forums :-)

you got the reaction...be happy :)

Daniel,

This photo didn't enlighten my imagination, but it did get a reaction. The reaction was "What the hell is it?" So, if that was your goal with this photo, then you have done well :)

My $.02.....The picture is not asthetically pleasing to me, but what bothered me the most about your picture was your inability to follow simple instructions. This is an annonymous photo contest.

Come Monday, I will bring this subject up again because of the comments my photo has gotten. I hope I'm not giving too much away, but I'm very surprised by the way some people out there have reacted!

Show me the instruction that says you can't put your name in the title.

Oh well, hokie gave away his last week! I spent days looking at that photo, seeing that eye, and wondering if it was his, but if it wasn't, maybe that eye wasn't really there, and maybe there was something I was missing in another photo, so I kept looking back over them all and coming back to that eye and hoping I wasn't just going insane.... damn you Hokie!

shouldn't he have named it "Frontside"?
05/17/2002 09:38:39 PM · #18
I haven't commented on "upside" nor voted it very high cause I couldn't figure out what it was and didn't want to assume anything. Daniel, you said there is nothing better than an enlightened mind. Can you enlighten mine and tell me what you took a picture of?
05/17/2002 10:02:01 PM · #19
My 11 year old looked at the photo and thought it was a butt. He is wondering why someone would even take a picture like that. I feel the same way. Not much imagination needed when looking at things that are supposed to be covered up by pants!!

I hate when we can't talk about the current photos too much. The very nature of this site has us forgetting last weeks challenge in favor of the current one being voted on.

I fear letting anyone who knows which photo is mine would tend to make people vote down the photo.. familiarity, contempt and all :-)

Maybe I'm missing something but I still don't know which one is lisae's....I won't make a guess here.

I think it's been pretty well ascertained that just getting a reaction, especially if it's one like "ew" or "ick", doesn't necessarity make for a successful image. And please stop saying "would of".

No. I dunno.

Don't tell anyone what? That I didn't turn the image over, or that I don't know why?

So, anyway, regarding your image, it's possible that there's a good image in there somewhere but it's so buried in compression artifacts that it's really hard to see. Focus seems off, as well. Maybe your intention was to make an abstract image, but I think it would have been more effective if the elements showed better detail. B/W via channel mixer with a heavy dose of the red channel would have cleared up the blotchy skin tones. I think it would be very difficult to have an abstract portray 'upside down' in a convincing way, but it would be great if someone could. Glad it's not me getting my undies in a twist this week!

I stand corrected...Happens to me a lot. I dont see that anywhere in the rules, perhaps it is just the accepted norm?
05/18/2002 06:20:22 AM · #24
With regard to anonymity --

But more importantly, . . .{edit}. . . they either wait until the challenge is over or talk about it without giving away what picture it is. It's only fair that you should do the same.

Drew

To me, this says keep it anonymous. It may not be in the rules but it IS the accepted procedure.

Dangerous...it has been said that the tallest people are the ones who are willing to stand corrected. :)
