I have thought about this too. I want to create 4 squre photos of the same scene for spring/summer/winter/fall to display in a single frame with a nice matting configuration somehow... it's a great idea for sure. Finding the perfect scene may be a bit more difficult :)

I would have to be a scene that undergoes changes. Most places do...but, for instance... a rocky shore wouldn't cut it :P
I like the idea...hmmm. now, where to set up the new tripod my hubby has promised me for my birthday next week.....

I've kind of done this with the Rose Garden here in Fayetteville. I started taking photos of the roses in May and took some additional ones each month through November.

I like the idea a lot and I will give it a shot!

Almost January (sort of) so I thought I'd give this a bump :)

Ack, 27th and I've STILL not thought of anywhere...

It's worth noting when this thread gets lost that Ben has conveniently placed a link from his profile. :-D

I am going to attempt the seasons using this scene:

my only problem is going to be making sure I get the same position. This is just the end of a driveway of a nice little farm house outside of Madison, but with the fog and fall colors I though it was a nice shot.

I am still trying to decide, too.
I am pretty sure I can hit (almost) the same spot over and over. Handy GPS and compass solves that. Triangulate off 2 different landmarks (that are always there), write em down, set up your shot, take a compass bearing of where your lens is pointing, write it down, shoot away, and return the next month. (or you could just drive a stake in the ground REAL good). (C:
I want to do something not that easily seen by many people, but then again, getting to it every month, leaves alot of my ideas out. )C:

I took the opportunity to get a head start on two of my three projects for 2004. I have been off work for the most part of the last two weeks and had time, so i jumped the gun :)

I live near a bunch of small lakes and there is one that I take pictures of all the time. Of course I didn't even think about taking them from the same spot so I will start that in January. The lake that I take pictures of has lots of trees and houses on it so it changes quite a bit and I'm sure that after a year there will be many changes.

Great idea, sonny! I've been struggling trying to decide what to use. I like your idea and we have a beautiful lake here, too. I think I may use that. Thanks! :-)

Awesome idea, Ben! Thanks

Has anyone started this yet? Do we get to see your results monthly or are you gonna make us wait until the end of the year?? :-P

I haven't started yet. Been busy and it's only been a high of 10 degrees F the last 3-4 days. I'm sure my camera wouldn't appreciate being out in that. I know I don't like it!

I'm not going to post mine until the end :)

I've slightly deviated from my original idea too. Instead of doing it on a set day, I am going to wait for a typical day from that month, because we sometimes get freak sunny days in January and stuff like that. To make the collection better I think it will be good to wait.

Because of this, and because I'm not old enough to drive to a location on a 'typical' day, I've had to take a view from very near my house, which isn't as nice as I'd have hoped. Never mind tho, hopefully in the end everyone will make a nice variety of different locations. :)

I'm "deviating" from the plan a bit. Hope no one minds (not htat I care if you do :-P). One of my resolutions this year was to take more pictures of my son, and chronical his life growing up. He turns 2 tomorrow, so every month on the 11th, I am going to take a picture of him. :-)

Hey, it'll make a cool gift for his grandparents!

Oh sureeeeee, Konador! The suspense is killing me! ;-)

karmat - Sounds like a wonderful gift. They're gonna love it!

By the way, you don't have to pick just one thing. I've been thinking about trying 2 or 3 locations that are nearby and just do them all on the same day.

heeeyyy you stole my idea :(

too bad you stole it before it was born or i would try and press charges ;)

yeah.. great to see that you stuck with it.. and that you thought of it when you did. i started perhaps 5 years ago and took pictures once a year. then recently i thought to take them every month of my entire body... i have managed to do it every month sometimes... but not all the time.... .. i liked to look at your pictures.. and see you all, how you change, and how your family grows.

nice job.

Any other updates on this idea? Besides being interesting, Deemer needs help :)

I've done something similar with my boys. It's a lot like Jacko's "La-Z-Boy" project. My boys were born on December 4th of last year. On the 4th of every month I take their pictures with a big white bear my husband gave me as a wedding present. It's fun to watch how big they're getting and how their personalities emerge more and more each month. Not to mention how much harder it gets to keep them both in one place each month!

Oh crud, I completely forgot about this! lol...

Maybe I should rename the thread 2005 Project Idea :P

A recent issue of Practical Photographer had a feature on this idea but the photographer took just 4 images. He took a lot of care to position himself in exactly the same place and then presented one image for each season. Even more unusual is the PORTRAIT orientation panoramic format. Very tall and narrow. Looks great.

Just wondering how many participated in this and who has (or will soon have) images to share with the rest of us. I liked this idea a lot but I'm such a slacker that I didn't start until August! Was anyone disciplined enough to follow through? I look forward to seeing your pics...even if you didn't manage all 12 months.
