Ok so I'm a freak. I know. Nobody has to tell me.
I have spybot and every single time I search, i get a bunch of hitbox and statcounter entries. I know they're not harmful, I just don't like them, so I want to block them. I tried putting them in the untrusted list in noscript (firefox extension) as well as in adblock, and I even blocked their cookies by going to tools>options>privacy. I still get entries for them (the ONLY thing that spybot finds, I'm so proud :) )
Anyone know how to block them? Just kill them in their tracks? |

| How? I have some vague notion of what a hosts file is, but I'm not that technically savvy. |

Assuming you're on XP take a look at X:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc. There will be a file named hosts. Simply add a line for each one you want to block(redirect actually). Follow the format as show in the file ie...
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 counter.hitbox.com
127.0.0.1 wwb.hitbox.com
127.0.0.1 js1.hitbox.com
127.0.0.1 rd1.hitbox.com
127.0.0.1 ehg-intel.hitbox.com
127.0.0.1 ehg-espn.hitbox.com
127.0.0.1 ehg-macromedia.hitbox.com
Each will probably use a number of different servers so as per above you may have to add more lines to catch all of them.
EDIT: Usual precautions apply... save your hosts file to a safe location before altering, use notepad or the like and not word, etc.

DARN! that didn't work. I ran spybot after I modified the hosts file twice (just to make sure), and it came up with the same number and kinds of entries. It says "Tracking cookie (Firefox:Default User)
(Firefox:Default User) hitbox.com (CTG)"
(just an example) and I DID put hitbox.com in the hosts file.

Did you make sure to clear everything before you did that? It might be a good idea to go offline, delete all the cookies, then block using the above method. Follow that with restarting the computer before reconnecting to the internet and they can't come back in through any gaps

WOOOT! I didn't have to restart or do anything too bad... I did have to clear the cookies not just from firefox, but also from internet explorer (Why in the living HELL did I have cookies there? I don't even USE IE! Never have! not in this computer anyway)
