For Portland proper here are some possibilites:
Portland, Oregon

Pittock Mansion, downtown and several versions of a night cityscape are represented. Most of the cityscape images were taken at or near OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) on the east side of the Willamette River looking west, including the night view. The zoo, Japanese gardens and other areas in the west hills are spectacular.

Springtime is a beautiful in Oregon (and Washington just across the river). The shades of green are amazing. Though shades of green are not represented, here are some examples of Oregon flora:
Oregon Flora

Close by, about 35 miles east on I-84 is the Columbia River Gorge with great vistas and waterfalls you only dream of in Indiana:
Oregon waterfalls and the Columbia River Gorge

Mt St. Helens is about 40-50 miles North of Portland and always worth a visit:
Mt St Helens
This image was taken very near the exact spot where, back in 1980, volcanologist David Johnston first reported that the eruption of Mt St Helens had begun with these immortal last words, "Vancouver, Vancouver... this is it!". Though he was over 5 miles away from the mountain he was vaporized and his body, nor any of his equipment, was ever found.

The Oregon coast is beautiful and has much to offer. Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach is about 60 miles west of Portland and charliebakerand son Zoomdakare two very hospitable DPCers that live right close to Haystack Rock and have made it justly famous at DPC. Unfortunately, while you are there Zoomer will probably still be away at college.

Some Oregon Coast images, not their's, are here:
Central Oregon Coast

From Portland to the coast... Cannon Beach, Seaside and Astoria are closest. There are incredible photo ops there. Not only is there Haystack Rock, but the shipwreck of the Peter Iredale, Fort Clatsop where Lewis and Clark wintered during their famous exploration of the Pacific Northwest in 1804 and the great Astoria-Megler Bridge across the mouth of the Columbia River.

DrAchoo lives across the river from Portland in Camas, Washington and is a very cool guy that likes to take pictures and is worth trying to arrange a photo safari with.

If you can, arrange a photo safari with DPCers in the area and you will have a great time.

I'm going to Astoria this weekend and hoping that the weather holds. 70's today, mid-70's tomorrow!

For what it's worth, I'm in Portland, too.

I think I saw there is rain for Saturday, but weather is your friend. Rain or shine, mother nature provides great photo opportunities... they are just different with different weather conditions. Some of the best photo opportunities occur during 'lousy' weather.

Astoria, eh? don't forget the Astor Column. you could get a great view from there. there is also a trolley on the riverside where you can get some great shots, including some of the bridge. if you go into Seaside then there is a monument of Lewis and Clark at the beach turnaround. Cannon Beach also has some very lively tidepools infront of the big rock. if you do that though, then try bringing some water proof equipment, as the water surface doesn't seem to come out to clear in pics and i imagine they'd do better with the camera in the tidepool. my uncle suggested using a ziplock bag with the camera inside. i'd suggest at least two, if you dare :D . hmm, well, enjoy the Oregon Coast!

I am from Portland as well. stdavidson named some of the best places to go.

It think it would be great if we set up a GTG in Portland during the spring.

If there is a gtg we may be able to drive down.

Wow!

Agreed - I overlooked the Astoria Column as a great Oregon photo op.

When louddog chimes in, and he is one of the most knowledgible outdoorsmen photographers I've ever met, and is interested in a photo safari in Oregon then I stand up and pay attention. It would be a fun photo safari with him and other DPCers that I know in the area that have NOT been mentioned in this discussion.

Many waterfalls are easy to find, particularly in the Gorge. Multnomah Falls is a huge wayside. You can't miss it if you're driving on 84.

There will still be snow in the higher mountains. People ski on Mt. Hood in the summer and most of the tall peaks have some small glaciers that stick around all year.

Oh, the column was at the top of my list. Right next to the Peter Iredale. I haven't been there in years - it's nearly gone.

kearock is right, you should go here if you want to take pics of falls. Multnomah falls is only 30 minutes tops from the airport if you are flying in. If you go there make sure you take the old scenic highway to the vista house. The view from there is incredible of the gorge and you will pass by atlest 5 waterfalls that you can get out and take photos of.

There will be snow on Mt. Hood and all Cascade moutain peaks and there is no need for a tour guide for Columbia River Gorge waterfalls. There are many waterfalls and they are all close to I-84 east of the airport. There is a special exit just for Multnomah Falls. A Net search will tell you everything you'll want to know.

In exchange for all the beautiful scenery that Portland and the surrounding Oregon area is known for, we do expect you to spend lots of money while staying here. It's only fair after all. ;D

If you are here into the first part of June, we'll have the Rose Festival going on, including a lot of activity at River Front Park. The Dragon Boat races are a lot of fun to watch and photograph. Lots of color and people.

If you do get a chance to drive up I84 to Hood River (the best waterfalls are between Portland and Cascade Locks. Take the Old Scenic Highway exit at Corbitt) cross the river and come back the Washington side on Hwy 14 and either come back across at the Cascade Locks bridge or follow it on to Vancouver and take I205 south back into Portland. Remember, don't spend any money in Washington though, buy your gas and food on the Oregon side. It's better for us and you don't pay sales tax either. :D

If the weather is nice you will probably get to see kite boarders and wind surfers on the Columbia River. Hood River usually has a bunch around there depending on weather, wind and how high the water is. I understand they had a bunch of sand and gravel brought down from the mountain during the winter, so I don't know how that's going to affect the wind surfers and kite boarders.

Enjoy your time in Oregon.

Hey all, I've retired from the Navy now and I've got a place here in SE Portland now. I'm still unpacking and putting things away but, I would love to see a GTG with a good bunch of you. Who'd like to take the lead in setting it up?

There's already a GTG thread here. The proposed date for a formal gathering is in early June.

Cool Thanks!!

Whenever there is an Oregon GTG I am interested. I don't really care where it is either.

I do agree with those that question whether or not out-of-staters, like DrAchoo or Ursula or Arizonans for that matter, should be allowed (just kidding... the more the merrier).

In my opinion, anything fun is a good idea. ;)

I'm definitely looking forward to it. I missed the one last year due to prior plans.

Thanks, I was just going to post that. =) It'd be great to meet some new DPCers...even if some of yall couldn't make it to the "formal" gtg in June, I'm always up for getting together and shooting unofficially if anyone wanted to do something like that. =)

Did anybody ever say they were willing to ford the Oneonta Gorge with me to try to shoot the waterfall up there? I've always wanted to do it, but never decided to actually get wet...
04/06/2007 11:11:45 PM · #25
I've always wanted to go up the Oneonta Gorge also. But that first log jam is a bit daunting when you have a backpack full of camera equipment. :D

Also, keep in mind that there have been a big rash of smash and grab breakins of cars at the parking areas at the different falls along the Old Scenic Highway. Evidently there is a group that is watching the parking lots for people to park so they can hike back up the trais and if there is anything in plain site worth taking, they smash the windows and take off. Once they hit I84, they can be gone in either direction pretty fast. So if anyone is planing any trips up along there, don't leave anything in your car that can get attention... and keep an eye out for people just sitting and not looking like they are doing anything but waiting.
