Another noob question.... :)

What do you do with the lens cap while you are using the camera? P&S cameras only have one lens (if any), so the lens cap can be tied to the camera and not get lost. Now that I have an SLR, I'm spending a lot of time looking for where I put the lens cap, and I know I'm going to lose one sooner or later. I thought about typing the cap to the lens. I'm happy to drill holes in the cap to tie the string through, but there's no way I'm drilling into the lens barrel!

I'm trying to get into the habit of putting the lens in my left pocket while I'm using the camera, so it's always with me, ready to be put back on the camera. This system is still fallible, but I'm getting better.

I'm interested to know what other people do. Any good ideas for lens cap management? Girls don't always have pockets to fall back on, so there must be better ways.

Right back pocket. Left one is for car keys usually. :)

Do be mindful though that your pockets have a lot of lint in them, which gets inside your lens cap and then on your lens -- so clean your lens caps from time to time.

Oh and if I don't have pockets, I just leave the cap in the bag.

I use cap keepers on all my lenses. It's an elastic band that fits around the barrel of the lens with an attached string that has a piece that attaches then to the front of the lens cap.

Ritz Camera has them locally or you can buy them online.

Ive lost tons of them, Then I buy new ones, then I find the old ones. Then I sell the lens, and now I have many different lens caps for lenses that I dont own.

Anyways. I usually put it in my pocket, but then I realized dust and lint gets on it that way, putting it on my lens. You could put it on the ground, but then you are getting dirt from the ground on it. I dnt think there is a ultimate answer. Just dont use one. That seems to be a popular answer

Doesn't the string get in the way of the moving parts of the barrell. On my Fuji S9500 that I had you could clip the lens cap to a clip on the strap. Now I put the cap into the pocket on the front of the camera bag. Most of the time anyway. Otherwise it's on the dash/front seat of the car etc, etc.

No, it doens't get in the way. The "leash" is long enough that I put the elastic band at the end of the barrel next to the camera housing. The "leash" does get in the way if I orient the camera to portrait mode sometimes (then I loop the cap & leash over the camera strap).

ETA - They're only $2. Worth trying one to see if you like it I guess. :)

I put it in my left pocket. When I put it back on I try to blow off any dust and stuff that might get on the lens.

Hello, Slippy here, working scientist and four time ribbon winner. No need to read any further, here is your answer:

Drop the lens cap back in your camera bag.

1. Camera comes out of bag
2. Lens cap comes off lens and goes into bag
3. Bag is closed

1. Bag is opened
2. Lens cap comes out of bag and goes onto lens
3. Camera goes into bag

Inside the bag is less linty than a pocket, but I still give the inside of the cap a puff before replacing it.

This has been a tip from Slippy. Working scientist and four time ribbon winner.

Also, if you haven't already, I'd suggest:
1. getting a clear filter for your lens. A good way to protect your lens. When buying a lens, I always say, "If I buy this lens right now, could you throw in a filter for free?". They've always been so glad to get rid of me that they're happy to comply.
2. get a lens hood. It's good extra protection, keeps stray light out, looks cool, and turns on the chicks.

I usually toss the cap in my bag, but if I am only taking one of two shots I will hold the cap between my hand and the camera I have big hands so it isn't much of a problem.

Maybe you could sew a fuzzy patch of Velcro to your camera strap and then attach a square to the front of each lens cap?

That sound like a good idea

Me too. If I put it anywhere else, and I do on occasion, I panic when I can't find it in my pocket :-)

Yes, slippy, it's a harsh lesson, but no matter how hard you try in life, there's always someone to outshine you. :)

Great idea about the velcro, Shannon. I've got piles of velcro downstairs, because I am the Velcro king. When we got a new elliptical walker (gym machine), it didn't have anywhere to put the TV remote, so within 5 minutes of getting the walker, the remote was velcroed to the side of the walker, so I can flick channels while I'm walking. My computer also has a few handy things velcrod to the side of it, so they are right there when I need them.

I think this needs to be taken to the next level. I'm going to throw out my camera bag, and put velcro on all my lenses, and wear my velcro shirt and pants, and just stick all my equipment to me before going out.
Everyone will see that I don't lose stuff anymore, and I will be so cool.

Random pocket which I forget about, then when I need to put it back on I search all my pockets for it.

Be careful if you're out photographing sheep or the like, you may go home with more than lenses stuck to you! :-D
