As is obesity. If the model had been overweight and comments made about that, would this discussion be happening at all?

Probably. People with good sense and taste will usually take the same stand.

which brings us back to my comment that toyan's "fat ass couch potato" comment was equally as offensive...

most of the comments about her thinness seem like legitimate reactions to the photo to me. one, maybe two, of them were a bit insensitive and out of place.

still... insensitive comments shouldn't excuse an insensitive response...

Of course it would.

I think it boils down to people need to focus to on the photo itself and not attack the subject. For all you know, that my be the photographers wife or child... then you are really looking for an ass whoopin! It's rediculous that people feel the need to pick apart the people when the reason we are here is to pick apart the photo.

With that being said, people need to learn that just because you are skinny doesn't mean you are sick or need to eat more. I know skinny girls who can eat a whole dang pizza and not gain a pound! It's their genetics, it's the way their body works. Same with obese people... you tell them to eat a salad.. maybe they do eat salads and can't lose the weight. So, we tend to pick on people for things that they can't help.

I can't believe the way people are so quick to judge other's appearences. I would like to see one person who is perfect? I haven't found one yet. It's not going to happen. We all have things (good and bad) that make us unique. People need to learn to stop bashing people for being different and embrace it. It's time to grow up!

I think people who react to photos probably have good intentions. It never occured to me that the person was thinnner than some might find acceptable or tolerable without saying something.

It is easy to judge with the eye. People love images and the baggage that sometimes come with them. Nothing wrong with this conversation - just be sure not to judge a b__k by its c___r.

I think it would if it had the same attention (winning the blue ribbon with the photographer engaging in an argument) yes. Lots of issues have been brought up before from photographs. I don't see why the 2 should be compared though. The model wasn't overweight and those comments were not made.

I've found in general people tend to hold back more with their insults towards people with obesity, as it is an known taboo in society that things like that just shouldn't be said. Anorexia has been brought the public eye much more recently though, and people still don't know enough about it or what boundaries should or shouldn't be crossed.

The thing is, a picture of an obese person would never win a blue ribbon.

Show me the model and specific photo he was pointing at? Of course he crossed the line but I wouldn't say EQUALLY offensive. I took it as an angered way to point out that society has gotten bigger and gives this bitter sort of attitiude to anyone who isn't.

Trust me. I don't know how many times random strangers or even friends point out I'm skinny in some mean way...even groups of them gang up on me. And say things like "honey you need to eat more," "you are so skinny I hate you," Or at work strangers see me doing physical things at my job (like carrying camera and lighting equipment) and say "no wonder you are so skinny". And I think no, I eat right. That's why I'm skinny.

But if I were to say "honey you need to eat less" or "you are so fat I hate you" or watch someone eat a burger and say "that's why you are so fat" and I'd probably get a formal complaint and a warning on my record and maybe even fired.

you know when i saw the pic , i did not think thin or fat , anorexic or not, the thing that struck me was her neck, and that's one hell of a long neck !

please don't tell me that's offensive now!:)

in the end it was a great shot!

Except this one :)

I personally find extremely thin people just as unattractive as I find extremely obese people. Call me weird

The challenge was "Trends", hardly a "beauty" challenge like "Color Portrait"

this is an absolutley beautiful picture of a woman. please please stop putting us in a box of what you think a woman should or should not look like. long necks, short necks, big waist, tiny waist, cheeseburgers? we are what we are. the photo is excellent and highly deserving of the blue. let it go bitter asses. let it go.

It is! And when I saw it I went... OMG AWESOME! lol. call me weird but I found her neck amazing! But that's just it... she IS thin... her neck IS long.

But calling her anorexic is a hit at her mental and physical health. It's no longer just and "observation"... it's a juegement.

good point, i think it would not.

Actually, I seem to recall that it has happened here before. I've certainly seen comments on photos of overweight women about how unattractive the model is. While there wasn't as much discussion, that may well have been simply because the image didn't happen to win a blue ribbon.

But there is a difference between finding somone unatractive and calling them morbidly obese or a chronic over-eater (which I will liken to being anorexic as far as it being a health/mental issue).

This is true. I've seen them. Unless the photo gets the visibility like this one got nobody ever hears about it usually. When I first starting submitting I received a disrespectful comment although it wasn't about weight. I just ignored it since it contained no value at all nevermind mind photographic value. I think it goes without saying snide remarks are inappropriate and should either be ignored or reported by the offended parties.

To me, the comments about the build of the model, slight or otherwise in such a disrespectful and callous manner, have no more place on DPC than using the N-word in a comment on a photograph of a dark skinned model.

There are ways to comment on a model's appearance and look that show sensitivity and maturity, unfortunately a few who are incapable of such commentary felt the impulse to convey their sentiments in a mean and hurtful manner. Shame on them all.

I joined this site hoping that I would learn something. Paid my $25. Know what I got? Photos of a girl attempting suicide, a christian cancelling his/her membership due to harsh words and opionions, a post of how US Marines were killing people in Iraq, and now this? Oh did I forget to mention the "you might be a redneck if.." thread.. i really really thought i was joining a site that would concentrate on photography and help me and i might have something to offer as well. Now we are debating on the size and shape of a neck? I am cancelling my membership. This is just stupid fodder that I am wasting my time with.

HOLY MOLY !! Ok, I'll fess up.. I used the "A" word when it came to this photo.. Here's what I said..

I'm struggling with this one. The lighting is right for this subject and the pose is strange to me, but it seems to be right for your model.Everything seems creepy & disturbing though.I want to give you my vote based on the quality of your photo, and I don't want to be swayed because I find your subject odd & not natural looking at all.Kinda freaky. This is the most emotion I've felt about a photo on this site so far..I think that's worth a lot and this to me is a 10.Can I say this with out hurting your feelings or the models, but I could go forever with out seeing her posed like this again, under this lighting. It looks more like a movie poster for some futuristic anorexic prisoner.Still a 10 for me though.I can't wait to find out who took this..REALLY POWERFULL IMAGE

I think that he knew her pose & body would cause some reaction otherwise there would have been no mention of the fact that he did nothing to elongate her neck.. I personally don't feel that what I said was offensive because I wasn't referring to her specifically, but the pose she was in and the lighting used to accentuate her body. I see that I'm in the minority though and I apologize for any hurt feelings.

To me, and no one has touched on this, but it was the combination of things that were so interesting & shocking.. Her hair !!! Her pose !!! Her neck !!! The lighting !!! Again, to me, it looked like she was intentially being portrayed as very thin & odd appearing.I truly thought that the photographer was using those assests to shock the viewer. So, I said what I said and I'm sorry if it was hurtfull.. I feel like I'm doing confession here and just wanted to get that off my chest if the photographer takes the time to read this.. I see that in her other pictures she appears nothing like this, so again, that says to me it was a choice to use the one photo that made her look either thinner then she is in real life (based on his description of her) or had this odd shape.

Lesson learned and I will be very carefull from now on when commenting on photo's if and when I dare do it again...

Just ignore these few threads, 98% of the threads are very photographic and we can all choose where we participate or not.

Yours was the only one with that mentioned which the photographer marked as helpful, and I think he was right to do so. Your comment was very well articulated and not one of the ones I was actually referring to. I personally don't think you should need to apologise for it :)

Please dont stop commenting!!! You said how the photo moved you, the thoughts as they were fresh in your mind and you as Konador mentioned articulated very well what your thoughts were. I'd be so lucky to have someone comment so candidly on one of my photos. Toyan used the natural lines of the models body to create some art.. disturbing, beautiful, powerful, controversial .. everything art should be. It evoked powerful reactions and for that I'm glad he shared it as much as I am you shared your opinion :)
