What is this ?
We saw this yesterday at my in-laws. It came up from the pond behind the house, across the yard, across the road and into the field.
It picked up whatever it is that it's carrying, and dragged it back from the field and to the pond at least.
First thought was a groundhog, but this isn't the right body or head shape at all. More like an overgrown ferret than anything else.
ETA a less over-sharpened version.

I think it's an otter. My grammie has a bunch at her place.

My first impression is that it might be a weasel, without a real size reference, its hard to tell.
The victim most likely is a muskrat. |

I've only ever seen otters in water (at the zoo).
I thought they needed a large body of water, not just a little back-yard pond ?

That doesn't look like the otters I've seen in zoos and what not. What it's carrying looks kind of like a dead Nutria (nasty things that look like a beaver crossed with a giant rat), but the live one's face doesn't look right and it's tail is too furry. I would vote for weasel based on google images.

| I think it may be a mink - I am not sure if they are native in your part of the world, but escapees from fur farms establish very quickly, and they are absolute killing machines. |

After further research, the mystery animal is quite similar to a Mink
The muskrat is most likely is still a muskrat, since they are native to Canada. |

| It's hard to tell scale from this photo, but in comparison to the musk rat, this looks pretty large so it could also be a fisher. Very similar in appearance to mink and quite a bit larger. |

Dunno, the fisher's snout is longer than this one's appears, but it might just be the head-on angle of the shot.
Also, comparing it with the size of the grass blades and such, it looks about right for a mink. I think we just have a tiny muskrat? :)
Or maybe its prey is something like a Richardson's vole, rather than muskrat?

I'm with Gatorguy on this one... more than likely a fisher. If your in-laws have pets, keep them in the house at night. We have them where I live and the pet population seems to dwindle quite a bit every spring.
